I found these old batteries in my old vape box. Are they still good to use? Probably haven’t been used in 5-6 years and haven’t really been vaping either but going to lightly go back into it again. I miss it but don’t miss smoking [emoji6]

Just not sure if better batteries have come out that need to be used in mods now days.

I have batteries in my rotation that are now several years old. They hold a charge well and behave themselves. They also haven't seen a ton of work as thanks to a decent stock, they're rotated enough that they're only getting charged once every 2 weeks or so. New batteries are affordable, and there's no reason not to stock up, but I wouldn't rush to recycle those without some more info to determine if they're worth keeping, such as brand, size, and model.

Which ones are "these"?

Have you checked their voltage? If they're under 2V, I'd recycle them. If they're above 2.5V, I'd charge 'em gently and try 'em, but only if I wasn't pushing the current specs on them.

FWIW, I still use some VTC5s that I bought in 2014; given my tootle-puffing ways and the fact that these particular cells haven't been used in my ADV mod, they just refuse to die of old age.

It's hard to tell what's safe unless we know what kind of cells they are and the wattage level you intend to use them at. As Rossum said, if they've discharged to 2V or less, buy some new ones.

If they were cells you used before try them and judge them by vape time. Lithium cells hold a charge well. Top them off and try them. If they remain cool or get only slightly warm after a period of vaping at higher wattages they may be fine.

If you want to know if a cell is good or bad, the only sure way is to test it for internal resistance. 18650 cells should be under 100 milliohms resistance. Several of the chargers you find online have that capability. If the wrap is damaged it needs rewrapping or replacing.

Other than that, vape time comparisons will help to weed out the weak batteries.

The blue ones should be worth trying out if they're not under 2.5v. I'm not sure about the red ones.

Do you have a multi-meter or other device to test their voltage? That's really the key safety factor. If they've fallen under 2.5 v, their insides can start to dissolve and doing anything with them - charging or using - could be dangerous.

If you can confirm they're 2.5 v or over, then follow Rossum's advice. Charge them up, preferably at a slower rate like 500 mA, and use them gently to see how long they last and whether they're worth keeping.

The red ones claim to be AW. If they're real, they had an excellent reputation way back when.

The Samsung 25Rs have a manufacturing date of September 2014. I have some from roughly that time, and they're still OK. Not great, but not terrible either.
