Ouchhh, I know that feeling. First time I ever drilled a top cap was with my Katana v1 and the black oxide bit broke 1/2 way through drilling the hole. I was not happy. Even though TI bits are roughly 2-3x as expensive as the black oxide (and 1 or 2 $ more than the cobalt), they're WELL WORTH IT. When I bored out my mp to 11/64", the brand new Craftsman TI bit I used cut through the SS like BUTTER! And that was with my crappy 10 year old corded hand-drill. A drill press would have made the job even easier.

Ya man. I bought a full set so I would not have to hunt and try to see every size on the small ones to get the size I was after. Thought I was getting a good deal. Guess if it came with a sharpener it would have been. Them bit sharpeners come at unreal premium. Can see a use for it now.

Just got the MNKE 18650 in and 3 sheets of 6x6" 400 mesh. Still no luck on the wire though. So I bought a pound of it. I could pop coils all day long and never run out.

Nice! Tell me what you think of the MNKE and the 400 mesh! That kanthal will literally last you 10 lifetimes of coil building...hell, you could probably sell off 90% of it on the classies and still have enough left over for at least a few hundred coils!

I don't know why, but find my Orion the most difficult of my genesis devices to set up.

It takes forever and the top shorts and pops constantly.

I've used the cig paper trick and this does not really help either.

How do most of you do it? I mean how many wraps, which way do you wrap etc

When I get it set up its great, it's just rough.

Ob,

I know but 100% sure that the reason is the oxidation of the wick. Also get that top coil as close as possible to the washers. Move the washer toward the wick, so there is a very short distance. The nut: make sure it shows two or three threads, so the coil is tight in between. cigarette paper is totally not needed at all and will create not a snug wick/coil.....
figure 8 for the last coil.......I don't put it between the washers, just 1 1/2 turn around the nut......
The fold of the wrap: have the coil go in the same direction!!!

good luck...you will nail it for sure!!! ;)

A1 32 AWG, 400 mesh @ 20 mm, 3/4 wrap coil...DREAM Vape!!!!

Honestly I've done all of that exactly. I have many, many genesis devices at this point and this is the only one I have trouble with. And it's not just one. I have four and all are difficult.

Maybe I'll go back and try to oxidize the wicks a different way. I just don't get it. It is a pain every time.

I have no idea how you guys are doing three wraps. I do four and it burns too hot.

@OB. I use the screwdriver shaft to wrap my coil. Drop it into the wick hole. Align things. Secure the coil. Take oxidized (standard or Jack frost) wick and slide it into the coil. Works every time for me. So happens my wicks and that screwdriver shaft are the same size. Prevents any unneeded tension from the coil cutting into the wick. You could use a drill bit the size of your wick...

very weird Ob, I was on skype yesterday with a friend and he had the same issues...oxidation was not 100%, after making a new wick it worked right away...Torch it in the blue flame, not too high or it will get brittle...I know you know it all but still...

also the 20 mm wick has a big hole, it fits inside and does not slip down, so my coil might be a bit longer, it reads 1.5 ohm

thanks everyone. I just dont get it. I have made new mesh, a thousand coils and I cant get it to go on these.

as most of you know, I have a LOT of genesis devices and am pretty well versed.

for some reason none of my Orions ever set up without hours of work first.

Ob, what mesh you use and where did you get it?

I had the same problems ob, I even used one of zens wicks. It literally took my like four hours to get it coiled and not hot-spotting at the top or blowing. I eventually got it, can't remember how exactly it started to just work, but I dread the day I have to recoil that thing. Good luck.

The ihybrid was just as bad if you ask me.

I am using McMaster mesh.

#400.

but have tried different kinds. I have had these issues since day one.

My friend had bought McMaster mesh 316L and after hours of trying to get no hot spots I asked him to use a different mesh and bingo, in one go!!! that stuff has a low carbon level and that was his problem. I have been using super fine mesh from the Mesh Company and never have any issues. The Orion is not forgiving, but once setup perfect, there is no better flavor IMHO.
