Convoy S series and C8 from FT makes some VERY good "budget" lights

My current EDC is a Convoy S5, w 8*7135 nanjg driver at 2.8A (I put custom firmware on the driver but stock is good as well) and T6-4C tint emitter

My first 18650 light was a Convoy C8 I randomly added to my fasttech cart along with e-cig supplies some time ago, great value.

My latest is a Convoy S3 host custom built by Richard from Mountain Electronics. It's has a triple Nichia 219B LED driven @ 6A. ~1500 lumens of floody high color rendering goodness in an EDC sized package. :D

Vinh is great to deal with he will build about whatever you want at a fair price. If you don't see it listed just shoot him a email.

Vinh is crazy kind and talented. He does amazing work and takes care of his customers, just like Rob does here. ;-)

I've got two V54 lights, a G25C2vn and a K40vn Fiat Lux.

I'm pretty sure my next light will be another Vinh light. I'm eyeing the MX25L3Cvn, but waiting for more people to order it and chime in on LED combinations and setups. You can go 6xXPG2 or 6xXPL or a combination of both. I have no need for it until spring time comes around again with camping/hiking season, so I'm in no rush to order it.

Cheers

If you want a good flashlight for under $50, check this one out:
Olight M20S Special Ops S Warrior Tactical LED Flashlight with CREE XP-G Gen2 R5 LED 420 Lumens - Uses 2 x CR123A or 1 x 18650

$30 from Olight. I have the M20-SX version (500lm) and unless you live out in the boonies, there is very little difference between 420lm vs 840 lm (and most of the cheap chinese lumen ratings are way over inflated). My M20-SX lives on my AR.

Zebralights makes some really nice lights as well, example SC62w and SC600w. You could probably get some really good deals coming up this Black Friday. I know a lot of you purchase cells from Illumn they carry a wide selection a usually run some great specials. I'll check my email I think I may have some coupon codes already from a mailer.

Hey flashlight gurus, my wife has given me the green light to buy a little better flashlight than the China stuff I've been using. I'm looking at the flashlights at Battery Junction. Is this one of the better suppliers? Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to stay under $50.

What are you going to use it for? It would give us a better idea to recommend one that suits your needs.

OK, I'm a logger and I use my flashlight every day--sometimes for hours if I have to deal with a break-down at 5:00 AM starting time. What I want is an 18650 flashlight with a low light mode for working in close quarters--not that much need for long-range stuff although I don't want to dismiss that capability. I also would like it to have a clip for the bill of my cap. I know most high-end flashlights clip the other way but this is what I'm hoping to find.

Still some black Friday deals going. This is good one, uses button top 18650 or 2- cr123 cells.

Nice!

I don't think you'd want any 18650 light clipped onto your hat. They're about 5 oz (150g) or more usually.

The one that KDM posted is a pretty solid choice. 6hrs runtime at 210 lumens (pretty damn bright for close quarters), 28hrs at 50 lumens (about what a 3 D cell mag light puts out). Only down side I can see is that it requires a button top cell. And with most flashlights, you'll need IC protected batteries.

I have a bunch of lights and my go to light is an Olight S10 single CR123a light. I use LiFePo4 batteries (6 batts and charger for $20). These batteries are rated for over 2000 cycles while LiIon's are usually 300-500 cycles (full charge/discharge). The clip reverses and it's not too heavy so you could clip it to your hat. It also has a magnet on the end to stick up somewhere while you work.

Olight S10 Neutral LED Flashlight 360 Lumens Cree XM-L2 Neutral White LED Uses 1 x CR123 $37.47
Tenergy RCR123A 3.0V (3.2V) 750mAh Rechargeable LiFePO4 Li-Ion Battery 6 Pack Kit with AC/DC Smart Charger (39055) $19.95

Another great choice:
Olight M20S Special Ops S Warrior Tactical LED Flashlight with CREE XP-G Gen2 R5 LED 420 Lumens - Uses 2 x CR123A or 1 x 18650 $30
(I have the M20 SX, paid $80)

I just got this in last week and it's a beast. It dissipates heat really well. They have a smooth finish reflector that should throw a bit farther. This light is cheap enough that I don't need to worry about losing or abusing it. Good beam out past 150 yards on high and good spill. http://www.kaidomain.com/Product/Details.S009844

Thanks, I'll look through the choices. For what its worth, you can hang an 18650 light off the bill of your cap. I do it with one of the China-made $10 jobs. I'm not saying its pleasant and something you'd want to do for long but when you need both hands free for a few moments--it works and thats what I'm talking about.
I've used a little single AA Gerber light for probably 10 years now in this capacity. It has performed admirably but there have been times when I could have used just a tad more light. As my vision has diminished with age, I could use even a bit more light still. I'm just trying to hedge my bets.:)

I hear ya about diminished vision with age but with the selection of lights I have, clipping a 18650 light to my cap has never come to mind.

I use one of these when I go camping:
http://www.amazon.com/Princeton-Tec-PT02-Fuel-Headlamp/dp/B0019DC2BW

The little single cell type lights I have are pretty powerful and light enough to clip to your cap for extended periods and they're also useful as your main light. Even while camping, I bring my 900lm 18650s but hardly ever use them other than showing off to my friends. I keep a 2x AA Olight T25 in my truck and that replaced my 3x D cell Maglite. It's much brighter and you can find AA batteries everywhere.

I'm a big fan of Olight, EagleTac, Surefire, Nitecore and Sunwayman. All offer solid choices for what you want at pretty decent prices.

Thanks for the comebacks. I sure appreciate them. I may well be asking for something that just isn't available today. I just hate seeing all these old protected 18650 batteries sitting here with nothing to do and I'm buying AA's for my work flashlight. Doesn't that seem wrong to you? :)

Heh. Just sharing my experiences. I went thru this during the 2 hurricanes that hit NJ. I only had 2 Surefires and it wasn't enough. I ended up buying LED drop-ins for my Surefires and a few more 18650 lights and the smaller single cell CR123 and AA lights. I got caught up in the lumens chase but realized they're not all that useful other than for bragging rights. Any time I need a flashlight, I find myself grabbing one of my single cells more often than not, even when I'm out and about. The S10 is my absolute favorite as far as functionality. Small, clips to almost anywhere and with the magnet, it's even more useful.

The light that KDM posted is an awesome deal and would fit 90% of what you want. I just flatout disagree with clipping something that size onto your cap :p. If you can swing it, I would recommend getting a 18650 AND the S10 with the LiFePo4 battery kit. That would cover you for just about everything you'd need.
