Interesting thread, this.

I think there is a lot of misinterpretation of intent on both sides here.

Proto (I know you're still lurking, I would be): I've only been a part of these forums (and in a very limited capacity) for about a week now. I claim membership for an exhaustive and possibly embarrassing number of internet message boards. I think ECF, as far as I have observed is in my top 3 for maturity, understanding and a real sense of community. I can have no avarice toward you for trying to shed a little common sense into the proceedings here. I think your heart is in the right place. And I think you are coming up against the wall of that sense of community. There is a great deal of kinship with the members here. I truly do believe you have the interests of your fellow board members in mind with what you are saying. And honestly? I agree. That said, try and be a bit more accommodating to the experiences and opinions of your fellow ECF forumites. They are simply trying to let you know that they know the risks involved with the exchange of personal information, and that they deem the persons worthy of those risks. Folks get defensive when you are accusing people they know and/or trust with being potentially dangerous.

To everyone else: Allow me to relate to you a few personal experiences. I am a role player. I play role playing games. I roll dice, pretend to be an elf or a cyborg on a weekly basis. There is a very large message board called RPG.net. IIRC, it is the third largest message board system on the internet. I have made friends there, people I have met and role played with in real life. Most of them are solid, stand-up people. But damned if I haven't met some folks who came off as genuinely good people that were absolutely psychotic. I had to change my cell number and move to a different residence because of one of these individuals. He was intelligent, sincere, and sick in the head.

He threatened my friends and myself and my family over things that happened within the shared mental space of our role playing setting. I received the decapitated head of a cat on my doorstep, and while I can't say for sure from whence it came, I can only assume that it was from this person. It was just a box, no addresses or shipping information. In honesty, it was stupid of me to take the package into my home and open it. It could have been anything. There are some very messed up people out there that do not show their true colors until the right circumstances are met. It happens.

In Conclusion: While Proto has been somewhat confrontational about his opinion (and I believe it's only because he feels strongly about it), he does have a point. I have no doubt that those of you on these forums who know each other on a face-to-face basis are not stupid people. But I believe that Proto was only advising discretion when it comes to involving yourself with people you just cannot know.

Am I saying cordon yourself off from the rest of the populace because any of the potential for any them to be harmful to you on an emotional or physical level? Hell no. What I am saying is that a modicum of discretion is never a bad thing. I've picked up a hitcher or two myself. And both times it was a rewarding personal experience. It is possible that I might have come to bodily harm because of my actions, though. Did I accept that in the first place? Yes, absolutely. But that's me, I am considerate and live by the Golden Rule to a fault. Which might be why I'm playing Devil's Advocate here.

Take Proto's concerns for what they are. Concern's for the wellbeing of people he does not know. Which is as selfless a consideration as there is. Though you may not agree, try to understand the position from which he is voicing his opinions.

I understand that in this situation the two forumites involved know and are known by other members of the forum, and that's good, and that help's solidify the sense of community that I've observed here. Do not let that positive aspect of these forums be the catalyst for alienating someone who is only trying to impart a bit of wise discretion. Disagree, if you do, certainly. But don't deride the man for being concerned for your safety.

BiteMe52: That was a classy handling of the situation. Hat's off to you, sir.

I don't think anyone involved in this discussion in the wrong. I just think the handling of presenting the opinions involved leaves a little to be desired, on both sides of the argument, is all. We're all adults here, and we can all handle a little constructive criticism, right?

This is, btw, one of the most civil "flam wars" I've ever witnessed on an internet message board. Good on everyone for that. Seriously.

I'll take a Prodigy and a Coke. ;)

Ok, I wouldn't go so far as to post in a public forum where any unregistered whackjob could see it, but that's your decision! ;)

Thanks to all of those people who complimented us nice people here at the forum for helping other people. There are some really great people here! -group hug-

Gah, Don't feel bad BiteMe. Doing a good deed won't go unpunished. It's just part of it in this day and age where every kind act or gesture is immediately suspect because of all the fear, uncertainty, and doubt people get pumped into their heads by the professional spin doctors on their favorite news channels. Just feel sorry for the afflicted, and keep on keeping on

In light of negative posts that have shown up here, I feel obligated to get off the sidelines and speak up for my friends.

First off... Tone.....
You are more than welcome!! I'm just glad that I was in a position to do something. Having another mutual friend tell me that this thread was going, just blew me away!! Thank you so much for taking our exchange to the masses and bringing your feelings to the forefront. Had I know that it was going to bring ridicule, I would have insisted that it remain strictly between the two of us.

Wiz, Vicks, Jo and the rest of you that have come to Tone's and my defense with your kind thoughts and words....
All of you opitomize the meaning of friendship. The willingness to come to another persons aid, even though it may mean you being attacked in return. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Proto......
Ah, Proto my friend, you most of all, deserve my thanks. Because of you, I have seen just how important the need to believe in the ultimate good of mankind is. Thank you for pointing out the pitfalls of friendship!! You are quite right!!! Every time you extend your hand in friendship, you risk a lot. You risk rejection. You risk loss of face. You risk ridicule. You risk losing that friendship, and ultimately, as you have pointed out, you may risk death. So why do we continue to do just that?
Because deep down inside, where we never let other people see, we really want to believe that there is a place where good overcomes evil. That there is a place or a time that somebody will do a favor for another person simply because they can. Not because they want anything in return, but quite the contrary!! Most of the time, they don't want others to know they have even done something nice!!! I certainly didn't!!! But I am glad beyond words that it affected him the way it did. I have known him for about 5 or 6 months now, and I feel that he and his brother are a blessing in my life, because I get to call them "Friends".
Was this a premeditated act? No.... it just happened, because it could. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. Maybe next time it will be you that is broken down along side the freeway, or short a dollar or two at the store, and maybe it will be Tone that steps up to the plate and helps you out.
There's no animosity here. Only sorrow on my part, that you can't accept the fact that some people are willing to go out on a limb and extend a hand in friendship and say "Here Bro.... let me help you".

One last thought... Never mistake kindness for weakness.

Chris
BM.......You just made me Misty!!!Thanks!....And Tone..I hope this thread keeps on going as long as the ECF does...It very well could be the most thought provoking and insightful thread ever posted here!!:)The Wiz!

My EC friends did better than I could pointing out the paranoid ignorance of prototype.

I believe it is even more telling that he dragged John McCain's name down to his level. This was so classless. Whether one agreed or not with Senator's McCain's positions, the man is a "true American hero". If I was ever in a tight spot, I would want BiteMe or Tone and definitely John McCain in my corner.
WV.....You've got that right my friend! All three of those fellows are true american heroes!!!:)The Wiz!

Well yeah i am a little off in the head at times but i dont think posting my addy here could hurt anything. (Ie ...Im a poor Man, generally nice guy, and ugly;) )

I doubt a "whack job" would want to come to my house. Its insane here lol.....They'd get to the door and after hearing 20 kids 2 dogs, 6 cats, and one crazy ... woman(love ya dear) all set to the sounds of Himsa, they'd quietly walk on. Maybe even leave some cash at the door for my troubles :D

But yeah I love the pay it forward thing, ive been an advocate ever since the movie :)

Kudos on the whole sweetness of it all.... You guys ROCK !!!!

I just am not fond of this notion of handing out addresses over the internet.

Neither am I. However, when I started buying off the classified section, I had to let my guard down a bit to overcome my fear and trust that the person was sincere. Thus far, I have not been dissapointed.

Have you ever watched the news about the 18 year old girl on a forum thinking she would get free makeup and instead got a free ..... rape and murder?

Yep, and that does frighten me, but I do not believe all people are bad.

Somehow, the laws of nature or evil of mankind don't apply to any of you guys, right? It's people like you that think "Oh it can't happen to me!"

I am perfectly aware that the laws of nature apply to me, as well as to anyone else. I guess through chatting back and forth, it has given me some sense of judgment of the person and I follow my gut feeling. Perhaps I am totally wrong for doing so and one day it will bite me in the ..... I mean face it... I even have my own picture up as an avatar. I guess that could be dangerous.

The act was out of kindness yes--but not random. It's a thread giving a false notion that giving your address willy and nilly online will lead to everything good.

I didn't take the topic at all like you mentioned. I certainly didn't take it to suggest any willy nilly address giving.

Actually, because I have bought and sold things on the classified section... I do have MANY people's addresses. I, too, have sent people things "outta the blue" in an attempt to do a good deed for the day, week, whatever. I would never abuse having their name and address. But, yes... some people would.

The people I sent things to honestly didn't know where it came from, as I didn't want personal recognition for it. I simply enjoyed the silent self gratification of "Paying it forward."

But you do make one very valid point in all of this....
"No Good Deed Goes Unpunished."

Here's(cheers) to hoping we all enjoy the internet safely.;)

"The term "pay it forward" was popularized by Robert A. Heinlein in his book Between Planets, published in 1951:

The banker reached into the folds of his gown, pulled out a single credit note. "But eat first — a full belly steadies the judgment. Do me the honor of accepting this as our welcome to the newcomer."
His pride said no; his stomach said YES! Don took it and said, "Uh, thanks! That's awfully kind of you. I'll pay it back, first chance."
"Instead, pay it forward to some other brother who needs it."
Just want to thank you for this reference. I somehow missed reading this book and it's in my collection!... reading it now, I love Heinlein, one of my favorites.

Hey all! I recently checked out this thread and it really touched me, I have always been a firm believer that there are good people in this world, some people laugh when I say that, but it is simply how I was raised. Ok, so a little over 6 months ago my husband and I switched to vaping, we have little ones and I recently lost an Aunt (she was only 45) to lung cancer, she left her 4 children behind (13, 16, 22, and 29) one young Grandchild, and my Grandfather who had to see his daughter die from a habit he himself kicked when I was about 2yrs old. It wasn't entirely the reason but it definitely got me looking into my options. It's really sad how we can see what cigarettes do to us, but it's not enough to just make us drop them. However shortly after this all I got a call from an Angel, it was actually a good friend of mine, but to me she is a savior and she gave me so much more then she/I will ever know. She told me about e-cigs, and I thought if it works for her and her husband, I can do this (they smoked as much like a train as I did.) That's when I found ECF and started looking for an e-cig to fit my needs. Well I found a 510 and ordered it immediately. Well longer story shorter, I outgrew it and now have 3 big battery mods. I listed the 510 kit with a few other things that I was selling (in classifieds) before I read this post, and really I am happy it didn't sell yet because now I may have the chance to help someone. So this big question is, does anyone know anyone (probably female because it's pink) that is in need of a good little 510 kit? (feel free to check out the classifieds for pics) Also included if needs is a purple PCC and a passthrough. I don't have any matching atomizers for it, but I can probably find a black one, also I will include a small random bottle of e-liquid (more then likely sweet.) If anyone knows of anyone that is in real need of these items please let me know and give me the address I will ship it myself. Thanks everyone!

The best suggestion I have is post it on the PIF Treasure Chest Thread and specify it's only for someone in need.... OR watch the PIF emergenccy needs and give it away there when you see an applicable need.
