But I already have wood for my 2nd. Looking at all you've found makes me want more and more and my wallet is screaming in pain already!
I like the spalted mulberry. That would make a fascinating mod all black and cream....mmmmmmmmm.....
Just think how good he'll be by #14! These first runs will seem primitive.
I know it's weird replying to my own quote, and I was joking around because I am kinda jealous of those of you who already have 1 or 2 Dibi's. But with Peter being a craftsman and not a manufacturer, I'll bet the Dibi WILL evolve and become even better over time. I'm in for #14 and will likely add another in maybe 17 or 18.
Peter can you possibly let un know on occasion where the waiting list stands. Just something like "I'm closing out run #17 booking orders for #18?"

I think Mark at Burl Source said heavy spalting creates weak spots that you need to stay with lightly splated. But I could be totally wrong.
Yes, spalting is basically where the wood is rotting internally. It makes beautiful patterns but can make it very weak. As a woodturner I have turned spalted wood bowls and you definitely have to be careful when you have the wood spinning at 1000 rpm. Pieces of the wood can become very painful projectiles.
That being said maybe the stabilization process reduces that weakness enough, I don't know. The wood I turn is dry but not stabilized.

I don't know. Mark at Burlsource did say that two things to avoid are "spalted" and "oak". We like to push the limits around here; but that's pushing it from both ends, no?
I see you guys beat me to it. Thanks. I'm learning never to assume that stabilizing turns something intrinsically weak or impractical into a sure bet.
I wonder, would Kamagong be workable for this mod? It should be pretty strong. It's called "Iron Wood" and it is strong enough to be fashioned into fighting sticks so I think it might be strong enough for this mod. I'm not sure if it would damage your tools though.

I am a bit shy about working with ironwood. It puts a beating on tools; but, more pertinent, some of the boring operations I have to do develop a lot of heat even on gentler woods. I'm not sure If I can bore through it with success. I'm willing to try, I guess, but I'm not sure it will work. And you'd be running the risk not only of a failed attempt; but some retooling charges as well. There's lots of pretty woods out there.
arrrrgh!!! The woods I like are either too hard, too weak, or simply not available in size!

That would be a travesty. Sorry, but IMO that particular piece should NOT be dyed. When something looks that great in its natural state, you don't mess with it!
I agree. I think it's gorgeous as is. Unfortunately, it's both oak and spalted. Maybe if I get it stabilized clear it might stand a chance.
