Funny how everyone can be so different. I have been into electronics all my life and built (as in from IC's and discrete components) my first computer in 76 so you would think I would be the one with blazing computers. Not so much. I have 3 old Dells running Windows XP Pro (yea I know end of life, but I know XP inside and out and really like it) and 1 old HP server running Windows Server 2003 in my network. Just doesn't excite me anymore.

PS, what would be good for an old NT / XP guy to go to. I need to be able to administrate them under Windows Server 2003.

Backlight on a keyboard? What for? Don't your fingers know where the keys are? ;)

Old habits, you see the screen better if the room is dark... so the keyboard has to light up:).

Also... gaming keyboards have 3 'sets' of F keys for different macro configurations... the different colors tell you which F key sets you're using. That's why you need the colors. Probably not necessary for most users, but a must for gamers:).

I used to build all my own systems too, but when my cousin stopped working at a computer parts distributor, it wasn't as cheap as it was anymore. Last few systems I got were from ibuypower.com , it's not a very good site for people who can't replace their own boards, but what's nice about it is you can configure all your own individual parts. They are fantastic for RMA too, and will burn your systems in for you, so any building fails are caught before you even get it. And, they can be a better price than buying components ala cart if only on shipping. If I kill a video board (or any other component, but it's usually the video card) within a year, they will mail out the new one and send me a prepaid box to stick old one in and ship back... I've actually killed 3 different video boards on 3 different systems right near the 1 year warranty mark over the years, so that alone is a good deal with no downtime (I buy systems for the kids and my mom too). Something to check out anyway:).

Xenserver and xendesktop for 10 clients is free. Pretty cool having thin clients in the house. Lol I run that on an old xw8000 HP but I did spring a lil for the freenas hardware, no disks in the xen server.

For 2003 server and I'm assuming domain environment, I'd stick with xp. If you can upgrade to 2008 server Windows 7 is great. Just my opinion, been through them all from nt to 2012. You can administer windows 7 in a 2003 domain but there's some things you will have to deal with. 2008 gives group policy extensions and personally think it's worth it.
