i love the pene and the oddy but they are starting to drive me insane.

only one out of 10 coils i make seems to work like it should and its really pissing me off right now.

i'm at the point where i wind them up and they seriously look factory made... spotless. no hot spots, perfect and even spacing, no touching... the lot. i never thought i'd make such nice coils but there... i've done it only they keep tasting burnt time after time after time.

I try winding them loosely, tight, moderate, .15 all thru .2 kanthal A on the stock wick... heating up the coil and sometimes the wick beforehand.... i'd like to stick to one wick right now, its not like i'm pumping serious power thru it and need more surface area.

this is driving me absolutely and utterly insane. anything past 5w feels burnt.

what i dont do is "break the coil in", since the few good ones i managed to do didnt even need it. besides, what if you dont have a VV and you're running at 1.5ohm or something.... how the hell do you break it in with 10-20w? thats a lot of skunk down your throat :)

wild guess but could it be the wick? i'm using the stock wick that came with them.

Just a thought but how long do you use the coils before you discard them?

Most of the resistance wires have a coating on them. You can burn the resistance wire with a lighter a few times until it turns red. Just move the lighter back and forth as a spot turns red. This will burn off the coating and you will get a much better initial taste from the wire. That taste does go away on it's own after a while.

Next question. When you say you taste burning does your wick actually look burned? Trying to figure out if you're not getting enough juice as that might be the other problem. Prime your wick with quite a bit of juice before you screw everything together. On top of the coil and down the channels as well. Always do that before firing the coil the first time.

hi there, i use the coils about a week i'd say

I always burn the resistance wire with a lighter.

I get the burnt taste from the get-go so the wick is hasnt had time to burn.

Juice can't be the problem either since it happens even during a very short draw like 2-3 secs with the LC cranked up all the way. that could even eliminate me strangling the wick by tightening the coil too much, which i believe i've learned not to do. Absolutely no hot spots either and i do prime everything before i put it back together.

what i noticed that i doubt matters is that the carbon buildup on the coil starts off in dots of carbon at random spots.

Not sure then. It's strange. I've never even looked for hotspots because I didn't think it was really an issue with these types of coils. I just wrap and go. My first few coils had some shorts because they NR negative wire was hitting the juice control but the short just made the ohms jump and didn't make it taste burned.

I'm sort of at a loss.

The only thing I could suggest is possibly trying a double or triple wick coil. Instead of only having one wick inside the ceramic wrapped in the wire, have two. Only one wick down the channels. Keeps a lot more juice under the coil and to me it's a very good vape. I haven't used a single wick in a very long time.

Sour.... Try using double 3mm wick(with a single in the wire channels). After I have mine built I wet the wick and do a 5 sec wet burn, add a couple drops and wet burn again. I repeat this 5-6 times. Make sure my draw isn't too stiff or too airy. Then I wet the wick, screw the mouthpiece all the way on and hit it a few times to check it before putting the tank on and filling. Hope this helps. Don't get frustrated. You'll get it and once you do the vape is amazing. Haven't had a dry or bad hit yet.

What voltage are you running the 2 ohm coils at? You might try a higher ohm/voltage combo and see if it helps. I still think your mod could be part of the problem. The LT 2.1 and VariTubeX are the same thing I think. If you're running the 2 ohm at 4.5v thats right at 10w, you could make a 3.5 ohm coil and try 6v for 10w and see if you still get the same burnt taste. I always heat my resistance wire to glowing red before making coil, it helps get rid of that bad taste before wire is broke in. Some say it taste metallic, to me it reminds me of the smell of a wet dog! I can't stand it so I pre treat the wire.

Sour the issue of burnt taste is certainly one of lack of wicking. It can be related to the type of juice you use (100% VG is thick) so play around with the wick. Try double top wick, try opening up the juice control much more and also post some close up pics if you can of your setup. I have found that the stock wick is the best and I've never had even a single dry hit.

Be sure to read my two guides and you wont have to deal with that issue again.

hi guys, i tried a 2 wick coil and it worked this time. what i did different was to spread out a ~4.5cm piece of 0.17mm wire over the entire visible surface of the wick rather than wrapping the coils close to each other that i usually do.

what i also did differently this time is that instead of cutting one of the wicks to the size of the ceramic cup, i unwound the 2 wicks, cut off a couple of strands from each and wrapped it back up so that it fit the channels.

voila, vaping at 17watt and its very very decent right now, even tho it doesnt feel like 17w as the vapor is not that huge.

even tho i still think i got lucky, i still dont get why i can't make a regular coil work...

do you think it's the spacing? i kept hearing that as close to each other as possible without touching was actually a good thing... here's an example from a few days back... so beautiful yet so nasty to vape on, yuck.

I think coils are too close together. I spread them as far as I can get them evenly spaced in the cup. You are concentrating your heat on too small an area of juice. Spread the heat out over more juice and you'll get better results. The double and triple wicks add even more juice per coil, thats why they work so well.

thats actually what i did and it worked fine... * crosses fingers

i had this "the closer the better" stuck in my mind since i've heard it on quite a few occasions so i thought i was doing a good thing.

oh the double coil that i did earlier was a failure aswell even tho it took some time to understand. juice tasted horrible, but not burnt, so i thought i screwed up the mix but using the new coil it was fine.
