This, and never install a browser toolbar! Even the ones that aren't malicious slow your browser down, though most are just advertising schemes.
Even Windows? Yeah, computer illiterate here.

I've never seen a Windows toolbar, but I'm a browser minimalist. All I want my browser to have is a spot for me to type a url, or if it's chrome, a place to do a direct google search.

All of the toolbar add-ons that have constantly running things like ads, stock tickers, funny quotes, whatever, are constantly communicating to something. The worst non-malicious offenders are the ones with constantly updating graphics, like advertisement videos.

Whoa, 24,467!

Certain other add-ons may be fine. I use Firefox and use Adaware, NOScript and a few others. But browser toolbars at BEST just get in the way. Same would be true for the other web browsers.
I was just talking about what's already installed. Like I said, computer illiterate.

Oh yeah, it drives me nuts, especially when we were on dial up. Tired of everything they run when you're trying to read a news story. :sneaky:

NoScript is a browser add-on I definitely recommend to anyone! A little annoying when you first use it, until you've "allowed" all your favorite sites, then it's only noticeable when you visit a new site. It blocks ALL scripts - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I remember when you only had to worry about "bad" sites - but these days good sites get hacked all the time, so this extra layer of protection is nice.

Thanks everybody. I'm using firefox with noscript.
DavidOck that's exactly what happened. The search engine somehow got switched from google to yahoo. I didn't do it, and no one else has access to this computer. I'll try to switch it back and I'll give the malwarebytes a try.

Oh... firefox. Yeah, they cut a deal with yahoo not long ago. Every time my firefox updates I have to set my search engine back to google.

But you mentioned ads too... so malwarebytes is probably still a good idea.

In FF, click Tools, then Options. There's a screen there to set your default search engine.

Might look into AdAware, Philo. Blocks most ads unless you ok them.

The goog has enough info on me. Don't care to use their browser :)
