Just got an e-mail from Stormy's Vapor Cellar about signing the petition.

I know someone said they didn't think that would be a good idea but frankly I wouldn't care if I received one from every vendor I have ever dealt with. I can delete them. Takes two seconds.

Personally I think we should make sure we patronize those vendors who take the time.

I suggest that as soon as we hit 5,000, we should begin a second petition that includes more details about tobacco Harm Reduction (not just e-cigs) so we can carry over some of this momentum and see if we can't hit 25,000...About 1 in 5 people uses tobacco in some form, that means the odds are good that every one of the 5000 signers should know at least 4 people that don't smoke who would be in favor of continued (or increased) access to satisfying and affordable smoke-free alternatives.

I agree Thad, that petition is truly needed. My only concern is insuring that we have close to the signatures committed prior to submitting. I don't know what the rules are if it comes up short after 30 days. It would be great to submit a petition and by day 3 already meeting the required number and have it grow from there.

That's why I'm bringing it up now. Between now and when we reach 5,000 signatures, we should work on writing something really good that will be ready to start as soon as we hit this initial goal. I suspect that it will be some time before we get any sort of response back from the initial petition, but we can help out the administration by drafting a second Petition that clearly defines the response we want. :)

Well, I didn't particularly mean to convey that I don't think it's a good idea, just that I wouldn't want to see it get out of hand. I do think that mass e-mails are a great way to get the word out, but I feel that e-mails from all the major forums (and CASAA) would be a more reasonable approach.

For right now, whatever gets people to notice this is fine with me! I just wouldn't want it to get out of hand; we'll become desensitized to calls to action if we get dozens of e-mails every time there's an event to attend, a petition to sign, or a bill to oppose.

I also agree 100% that vendors who support the cause by spreading the word deserve the extra business. Anybody keeping a list?

Honestly, I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves. We've had to pull out all the stops just to get 5,000 signatures (which I firmly believe we'll get) . . . getting 25,000 signatures is going to be a lot more work (and a lot less certain). Moreover, we're really not sure what kind of response we're going to get to the petition.

I think before we invest a great deal of time and effort into a second petition, it might be better to see what the official response is to this one. It may be that the response we get would help us better frame another petition, if we decide to go that route.

I have to agree. Let's let this one play out before we start investing serious effort into the next step. While it wouldn't be a bad idea to come up with a general plan of attack, we don't want to waste too much time working on what comes next before we know what should come next.
