im curious to try the SS it seems to be all the rage. however i'd assume youd really have to keep your mod standing straight up or it'll leak out of the drip well. The silica tucked in there seems to keep in under control if its at least half full

What I do is wrap some oxidized SS mesh around a silica wick...it acts as a shield so the wick never burns and you get the cleanest flavor ever with the wicking action of silica and SS combined.

with the mesh running horizontal along the coil? or standing up in the center? would this work with my fluffy silica too?

I have it in there like a regular silica wick...I only cover enough of the wick to wrap the wire around then tuck the silica down into the well to soak up the juice. Yeah it will work with any type of wicks.

It's pretty easily done with the default Phoenix. Just takes a bit more creativity. Givve it a go. If you go with the normal K 32 wire, it will take 5/6 wraps to get to 2.5 or so. 4/5 wrap works the best at 2.0 ohms. Why would you need 3 ohms? curious.

looks sweet dude! wish i would have waited for the xl  what gauge wire should i get to get a 3ohm coil with 4-6 wraps?

i vape a vmax. and that thing hits hard. ive tested it on a scope and its essentially an 8v mod unregulated with PWM to "vary voltage". anyway 3-4ohms puts me in the midde of the variable spectrum. right now with the 34 wire i have a massive 9/10 coil that i have to practically snake around the posts because its so long lol.

thank you for your excellent review Optimo. I have 2 phoenix clones on the way that I got from litecig and they come with 5 extra pre-wound wicks and a screw driver so i should be good to go to get started. Years ago I tried to make wicks, but it was too hard to get at the components, so this will be a godsend for me with bad hands.

I have a Super T P18 that i've been using with two 3v AW batteries lately with all atomizers and cartos with success. I only use 18650's when i'm in a jam now, because i really like the warm vape and instant hit of 6 volt. If I keep them juiced well, I have even vaped older 510 reg atties and at times LR 901's in a jam. I've purchased some 3.2 ohm carto's and have found they aren't any more durable than than 2.0's on 6volts, and the vape is too cool for me.

One question: How many rounds of coil for a good stable warm 5-6 volt vape? Doesn't the spacing of the rings themselves effect ohms (?), in addition to how many turns around the wick?

I ordered some SS mesh/Kanthal from vapor.....'s site (? the $3.50 shpd 6" rolled link previously) and want to do your mesh and silica wick. that looks amazing and should wick better than anything i've tried in the past.

also, do you have a tip on oxidizing the mesh? I gave up so many years about on DIY atties that i am clueless about the latest techniques.

thank you so much Optimo. I just love your videos and you are adorable too. you remind me of my son! ;-)

Look for some Kanthal 28 A1. You should be able to roll 5/4 coils and obtain at least 3ohms, probably more toward 3.5

I plan to order some very soon. Have a few DID clones coming.

ok i youtubed how to do the SS mesh so i'm good on that. just need to know the rolls of the coil for higher volt vaping. I assume i can unroll the rolled mesh that i bought since it's not oxidized yet. thank you!

The more wire you use the higher the ohms will be. You want about 2.5-3.0 ohms for 5-6 volts. I would say about 6 wraps or so...as for the spacving I wouldn't put them close the further spread out the better it wicks imo.

thx guys! I'll look into the 28 kanthal. I have some 32g coming from vapor...... I also have nicochrome (don't remember the gauge) that I got a few years ago from McMaster, back when Scubadan was using it. I'm sure it's the right gauge, because i bought what they said to buy. I maybe able to login there and see what i ordered.

with the easy of replacing coils on this, i'm sure i'll have plenty of supplies to practice :)

28g Kanthal A1 is about 5.5 ohms per foot and would take quite a bit to make a 3 ohm coil, 32g Kanthal A1 is about 13.8 ohms per foot and an easier gauge to work with when making higher ohm coils.

That 32g Kanthal should work just fine to make a HV coil. Also, Nichrome works just fine in these.

Yep, there's a trade off there. I can get a 2.5o coil using K A1 32 at 5/4 wrap spaced right, but with the thinner wire you can get a few more wraps in there which should kick that up a notch. I noticed that I mentioned 5/4 wrap with 28 which is incorrect. I guess it comes down to how much wick you are winding it around.

thank you so much azplumber! i think what i have will work just fine. I got 1 of my clones today in the mail along with 5 extra pre-coiled wicks. i couldn't find this thread so i started a new one. I have pics of the phoenix bridge and the double wicks (weird) on this thread, if you guys could tell me if it looks ok or odd:

One 3mm silica will work fine, but heck, these don't look too bad, but be sure to trim them down to proper length. That is a whole lot of wick with two strands. I'd suggest placing the coil in-between the posts instead of on one side. Hard to tell how you have that. To be honest, there is never too much wick unless, as spraintz also says, the coil is too tight.

Optimo, I made a SS mesh vertical coil tonight and it WORKS!! i didn't do the cotton or silica up the middle, because i wound a coil around an 1/8 drill bit my husband had and just wanted a down and dirty one. I have no clue what ohms it is, but it fires nicely. I stuffed some silica down one side of the well to catch some of the juice and feed it to the vertical coil. I need to put some on the other side of the well also, because juice drips out the air hole when i lay it down. I think it will work fine, once i fix the wire to the post that just broke after vaping it a bit. Those wires are very fragile. I thought 32 Kanthal would be thicker than the nicochrome i have but it's just as thin. I'll get better at making them, but i'm amazed that i've made one that even works :)

thank you guys for all your help!

video of vapor on it:

i don't know how to embed the video, but if you click on the link you can see it

pic of the vertical coil. looks a little cramped on the coil rings but it works great.
