Here's my ELA with a "famous" Taifun :p Todd's previous taifun whose serial # happens to be my exact favorite # combo  Grabbed it through an international trade to Denmark for my SS Chi for my Taifun. I had slight regrets once the trade was done..until I received it

I wish they weren't so expensive or that I wasn't so broke. That looks really sharp.

This is a pic that I posted back in June when I got my first ELA. This was literally taken the day after I received her. I can't remember all the chemicals I used, but silver chloride was one of them.

So did you wipe the brass accents with the silver chloride to achieve that copperish color? And does it stay that color? I have a confession:
I have never put my brass accent rings / brass button on my ELA....they are still in the bag they came in...
I bought them almost knowing I would not use them.....if I didn't buy them though I would never be able to get them again and wanted all the ELA options.....

Google "Patination of Brass" and you'll find a link for recipes to achieve different colors of patina for brass. I can't remember which recipe I used, but I do remember that silver chloride was one of the compounds listed...mainly because that's the one chemical that I did not have. All I had that was close was silver nitrate and ammonium chloride so I ended up calculating how much of each I would need in order to get the proper amount of silver chloride in solution. I added the brass accents to the solution (heated to around 70-80 deg C), and let them sit there until I got a color I liked. I then gently wiped off some of the patina to get a more brushed look. The patina hasn't changed too much over the past 6 months, but it did get a tad darker...that is until I re-polished them the other day.

Ok. I admit it. I'm lazy today and using tap talk on my I phone.
I saw a post about giving ELA a good bath. I'm in the mood for cleaning. (Since I got to clean all my CPAP stuff anyway).
Can someone please post a link on cleaning ELA.
Many thanks from one old tired eyeball.

Hi Tnt, I dont think there is an "official" link or how to, but when I give my ELAs a bath , I just take them apart, soak them in dish washing soap and hot tap water. I used to take the locking and compression ring apart, but I dont want to mess the compression ring up , so I just take a soft brush and give it a good scrubbing inside and out as well as I can. Rinse and then go over everything with alcohol. You would be surprised even after hot water and soap and careful scrubbing, how much dirt still comes off the inside of the compression ring and inside parts of button.

Here is a photo of the parts just on the button. HINT HINT, I wish Super T would do a in depth and detailed video on total breakdown, including the locking ring, top contact and button etc.

PS the last time I cleaned, I just didnt take the contact off, just the parts on the locking system. If you notice, the gunk on the qtip is after I had alread washed and scubbed. That came out of the hole where the little black pin and the contact screws in.

I refuse, to take my ELA apart, until I get my 'Backup' ELAs!

The only thing I think you might have problems with is screwing down the bottom contact back on tight enough. I use a credit card to get it to screw off as snork instructed. Credit card is safe enough so it doesnt scratch. Only problem is getting it back on tight enough.

WHen I sent my ELA back in apparently it was not on tight. Believe me I used all my strength to tighten it back down, in fact I broke the credit card doing it. Im sure it wont be a problem with all you guys with strong man hands, but for those like Cucco and I with our hand problems, its quite a task.

I know, right? If only there were some sort of device, something long and flat capable of turning screws...

;) Just picking on you.

If you're concerned about damaging the rhodium plating on the top of the terminal, you can get leverage to tighten it from the side like this.

I'm pretty sure that rhodium is harder than steel screwdrivers, through. I tighten mine using a Phillips head more often than not, and there's no visible damage as far as I can see.

I hope David weighs in with some geeky advice about knoop ratings and so forth, though.

I wonder if you could go to the local hardware store and get a keyway stock that would fit in there...

Thanks Rojo, you can bring a smile on my face.

Its good to know that it can take some screwing around with no damage. I have a good set of micro screws that are real strong and have some sort of coating, kinda looks like the satin finish. I know they can handle that much better than usual micro screwdrivers can.

Thanks for the great photo.
