As someone who's used their ELA for months non-stop, I think you're overestimating how much torque you need to lock and unlock the telescoping section. It takes very little, and you actually want to avoid cranking the heck out of it. I think a smooth locking ring would work just fine. I think there are a lot of people out there that skipped the ELA completely just due to the knurled ring - some people really dislike the way it looks. I think this is a shame because they're really missing out on a fantastic device. Personally, I love the knurling - it's very well done and I like the way it looks.
Would I buy a smooth one? Absolutely. I'd buy two!
