I'm sensitive alright (and a poet, prose writer, musician, although they aren't really my main job, the one I have to have to make a living before winning the lotto) but I've learned enough to develop an armour. I don't think smoking has anything to do with it... Back in the 70s a lot of us would start smoking very young and it wasn't until very recently really that we all - in reaction to the propaganda - developed a fear/disgust of smoking. Nicotine is just an accident and not really that terrible, plus it's easy to give up if one actually wants to. I have a sweet tooth too and it's got nothing to do with sensitivity.

I absolutely agree. When I was little (about 5) there was an old lady lived next door to us. I considered her a grandma and often trotted over to see her. I lived in a small village, and she had relatives in that same small village. That wonderful lady had Nuthin'. No visitors, other than my mum, dad, grandparents (who lived directly across from us on the High Street) and me. Poor as a church mouse, especially by today's standards, but back then so were we all, we didn't notice it at all. Same old story. She died late evening. The very next morning her relatives showed up and stripped the place bare. No shame. I learnt my lesson about vultures very young.

I used to work for a medical company and I had to do a lot of deliverys to the elderly. Almost every one was just happy to see anyone show up and they always just wanted to talk. It seems that familys get to busy with their lives to even think of them until it's to late. But then once they die everyone shows up and talks about the old times and waits for their share.

I am sure that the lady you spent time with might have been poor. But your family made her rich with the conversation and time spent with her in her later years.

Chinchillas are really cool creatures. They are so feisty and have so much personality, lol. Like a ferret personality in a little fluffy rodent body.
My next door neighbor has maybe 75 chinchillas. She raises them for showing.

I am thinking of ordering a Thunder Shirt for my little Lhattie (not the one in my avi; that is my puppy in law, Bella!). I got Lhattie 8 years ago when my then 18-year-old daughter was trying unsuccessfully to find her way in this great big world and I was heartbroken. Lhattie was supposed to be my "therapy dog," one who would never leave my side and loved to go for rides in the car with me, etc. Somehow she ended up being even more neurotic than me, lol! She really IS always by my side, but only in the house. She gets very anxious in the car (probably thinks she is going to the groomer every time) and I really want to help her feel better. She has done wonders for me and I want to give back! I have seen the Thunder Shirt infomercials and I have been considering one. Or maybe the rescue remedy drops? She HAS to get groomed but it really upsets her to go.
The drops are wonderful! Max (my avi pic) has a little separation anxiety, and Im working on trying to get him therapy dog certified. Even if he doesn't make it, hes MY therapy and is great for balance assist, so may work more on service dog stuff now.

Very cool. That takes a huge amount of dedication. I've actually made friends with a few chinchilla breeders and rescues online. They can be great resources to purchase from since they buy in bulk and will sell off excess at lower than store price. Also great to get advice from.

I don't know what makes "smokers" different, but I do think we are.
And yes, I still consider myself a smoker at heart, even if no longer one in practice.

I think Michelle Pfeiffer said it best...
I used to smoke two packs a day and I just hate being a nonsmoker... but I will never... - Michelle Pfeiffer at BrainyQuote

There is just something about smokers.
Interesting, engaged, real.

Or maybe I'm just being weird now.
:)

True. There's a certain sense of community among smokers. If you asked, "Got a light?" someone always did and that shared 'bad habit' was an easy way to initiate conversation. That community mindset is also present among vapers -

that shared experience of a cultural society builds a foundation for understanding.
imo...

I have a question of the Winners : Were you notified by email, conversation (PM), or by an alert ?
When turning off my computer (after reading some more posts, I saw my alerts RED, so I clicked on it and in that was a list of those who'd liked my posts, PLUS a conversation begun by Flush something - so I looked at that and there was my notification of being a runner up - but, I also got an email in my go-daddy email on this laptop as we're out of town... so, both on ECF as well as my email, I was notified (grin).
Sorry to "Flush-(something or other)" we were leaving Wed morning to drive from AZ to CA to see a graduation - I in no way was expecting to win, nor looking for any special emails - just checking as I normally do each morning.... in saying all that, I don't know the person who notified me and I apologize for messing up his name here, I in no way am referring to any bad toilet jokes - it was a name I wasn't familiar with and think it started with 'flush'... and something followed that....
THe notification was definitely something that caught me off guard and I was immediately ecstatic!!! then... had to drive 6 hrs trying to think of some of the things on the prize list I'd looked over rather quickly when the contest was introduced to us.... and also think, what would I want? juice? perhaps an upgrade? I like both that I have to use presently, and it took me awhile before I found the link in the notification of the currently available prizes to choose from.... then I filled in the form (wanting to add some sideline comments) haha like if this one thing is available, I'd love it, (if not, I can live with that) but all the rest please pass on to others who perhaps need it more than I do presently.... (grin) wanting ALL the winners to get something special!
I haven't heard yet what my prize will be - I'll be happy with whatever they send (grin)- I try to be patient for what is to come!
NancyB p.s. I beieve the conversations have taken the place of the old PMs - I've been off for a year and now back on ECF and will continue :)

I like how energetic they are! I knew someone that had a few, and those little guys would bounce around so fast! I swore they could run walls ;)

It is horrible how troubled times of our life bring out the true nature of people. When my grandparents passed I had relatives show up I had never seen before wanting something. I thought when they where sick I never seen you and now you really miss them? I told them all to go on your not getting anything. Some people are just vultures.

Sorry about that but reading your post brought back memories. I understand though it can be difficult dealing with the loss of a loved one.
I agree with what you told them! If someone who supposedly cares had no interest in being there when the person was sick or even before then they did not care. Vultures should not get anything in my opinion. I think it is just embarrassing how some people can act. When my grandpa was dieing one of his sons were literally stealing stuff from him and selling things before he even died....it was just sad. Then he was trying to steal my granma's money after grandpa died and she was sick as well. My Aunt moved grandma in with her as soon as grandpa passed away and literally had to tell her brother that he was not getting grandma's money....it was just sad....

That's what they want.
Look up how much of your donation actually goes to the animals....less than 5%.(I thinks it's closer to 1%).
IF you want to help the animals, see what your local shelter needs, food/toys/bedding.
Yes, I know that :( it is sad how little goes to the animals..... Thats why I do not donate to them. I have always donated things to nearby or my hometown animal shelters.

This place has become, in a relatively short time, something special to me. The generosity of spirit, the comraderie, the sense of a shared past and a smoke free future...thank you, to everyone. Someone contacted me today, and offered to pif a mod they no longer use. I was speechless...then she found a matching drip tip, and I felt like it was Christmas! In turn, I'm going to pif one of my itty bitty evods to a woman who works with my husband who really wants to quit smoking and is very short of funds and is currently trying those awful $1.50 gas store disposables. So, I'm feeling very grateful tonight, and I guess I need to change my name to Karen...thank you, your generosity has deeply touched me, and if I'm ever wandering in the desert, I shall look you up so we can share a puff!!!

If there is a God, I think he found me tonight. Or I found her? Or he found me? Perhaps I'm made out of dinosaur dust? Regardless that would help me immensely, I'm going to get in touch with you asap! It's hard writing eloquent easy to read posts quickly but I'm doing my best sorry if they're clunky, my phone ha a small screen.

jseah for president? I wholeheartedly believe this person is overqualified to be honest, too nice. :D :D :D

After all the rough things I've been through the past couple years, and all my years for that matter, this night, THIS night, is forever going to stand out as a time where I found out that strangers hold my best interest and care about my wellbeing more than nearly all the people I interact with in person daily.

Again, there is a special place in the stars for you good people. The outreach I've received has made me really think about things and I truly consider you all my friends.

Lol...and I'm reserving a star for someone today... We definitely need a sappy movie!
