I've been known to cry during episodes of MASH, and even Twilight Zone.
Heck, I've been known to cry during some commercials.

And I'm 6'5 and 250 lbs, and I eat nails and crush beer cans on my head.

But I'm overly empathetic.
Way overly empathetic.

I can't even watch those Humane Society commercials.

The humane society commercials make me cry. It breaks me heart to know there are people in this world who abuse animals.....I personally feel that people who abuse animals are cowardly nothings.....I love animals :)

Agreed. Almost all of my pets are adopted or rescued, including my chinchilla. I currently have my 25 pound dog in my lap because it's storming and she doesn't like the thunder.
We took our dog to a big Fourth of July fireworks celebration on San Diego bay.
As soon as it started, she FREAKED OUT in a big way.

Luckily we had her on a leash, or we may never have seen her again.
She was REALLY freaked out, and in a serious panic.

She took off running, and I ran with her all the way back to our car parked about a mile away.
Then she sat in the back of the car, and I with her, until it ended.

At some point my wife found her way back to the car as well.
Although without my help, I am kind of amazed my wife accomplished that feat.

She's not real good with directions.
She goes the wrong way about 80% of the time when exiting an elevator.

Needless to say we now leave our dog at home on Fourth of July.
:(

DC, have you ever stopped to think that the reason most folks here on ECF smoked was because we were extra sensitive for some reason? We knew early on that things that were happening around us, just shouldn't have been happening around us??? whether it was abuse, or neglect or some pshycho mom acting out her stuff making her kids run the gauntlet in some way.... caused us all to be rather more feely that some other folks? I've found my hubby often crying right along with me at a dog movie (Old Yeller for instance), or some such...????
I know that many people we meet in the retired/RVers realm are NOT as sensitive as I am, and do not live their lives giving things away, making life long friends, cuz they are into doing their own thing, getting the latest shiney object to show off, etc. I have seen my life as different than theirs.... I CARE about how folks are treated, supported, loved and cared for, they don't to the same extent.
I wonder why, often but so enjoy finding others more like me, than those I prefer not to hang out with, here on ECF. is smoking or a previous hurt what causes our sensitivities????

I'm 5' 4", and about 250 lbs, 70+ yrs old and content with my life now, tho there are things I still want to do better than I have in the past..... I think we're 'real' and have a good sense of what's important and what's not.... what are you other folks thinking? your turn...

We all have the same addictive gene...for some it's food, some it's alcohol, or drugs, or gambling...we all were chosen for some reason to be nabbed by nicotine. So strange to think about it...my mother chain smoked through 4 pregnancies...I used to tell her I was born addicted. She told me I was full of {MODERATED}... But you have to wonder. Probably why I cannot for the life of me smoke/vape/smell menthols... lol

We live near a park that does huge fireworks every year. I pretty much build my dogs blanket forts to hide in for the 4th. It seems to work well.
Have you tried thunder shirts or rescue remedy drops??? Ah-mah-zing stuff

Awesome! I have always dreamed of volunteering at an animal rescue organization. Your dog sounds so sweet! Chinchillas are cool! They are absolutely adorable :)

I don't know what makes "smokers" different, but I do think we are.
And yes, I still consider myself a smoker at heart, even if no longer one in practice.

I think Michelle Pfeiffer said it best...
I used to smoke two packs a day and I just hate being a nonsmoker... but I will never... - Michelle Pfeiffer at BrainyQuote

There is just something about smokers.
Interesting, engaged, real.

Or maybe I'm just being weird now.
:)

The blanket forts seem to work well, so I haven't tried these. They feel safe in their little spots and are always fine after. The cats love them, too.

Chinchillas are really cool creatures. They are so feisty and have so much personality, lol. Like a ferret personality in a little fluffy rodent body.

It is "home" and "family" for me VVVVVVVV

I'm the youngest of 3 kids (I'm over 50 now) and our parents have both passed on. Mom first (about 9 years ago), and Dad just over 6 years ago. I thought that if I became executor of the estate, we could have saved on some of the attorney fees. Mom and Dad were "Depression-Era" kids and saved EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING). Mom's passing was expected, but Dad's wasn't. Therefore, a 40-year-old house FULL of CRAP that needed to be cleaned out. I'd thought I would have gotten help from my siblings (I live the farthest away). My sister couldn't even accomplish the three relatively simple things I'd asked of her within one month of Dad's passing. My brother did help somewhat, but fizzled along the way. I spent COUNTLESS weekends traveling (taking MY vacation days/personal time) to work on the house. Countless trips to dumpsters/Goodwill, etc. Had FRIENDS come help me (very willingly giving up THEIR personal time.) It took me three years to get the house ready (plus the housing market was VERY soft for awhile) to sell. Then I had to wait on the attorney to finish the estate returns (I wasn't going to tackle that.)

I'm done with my siblings. I know that doesn't sound very Christian of me (and I struggle with that feeling) but I've not seen my sister in six years - she only communicates to gripe about settling the estate. My brother only contacts me when he needs money. I thought about telling them both to stuff it and consider what's left of the estate as my reimbursement, but in the back of my head, Dad wouldn't have approved. So I've split what's left and I'm done.

It is horrible how troubled times of our life bring out the true nature of people. When my grandparents passed I had relatives show up I had never seen before wanting something. I thought when they where sick I never seen you and now you really miss them? I told them all to go on your not getting anything. Some people are just vultures.

Sorry about that but reading your post brought back memories. I understand though it can be difficult dealing with the loss of a loved one.

People call my dog a wolf, but even he has better manners than some people I've seen act after someone passes on. Vultures is an apt description!

That wasn't the one where all the fireworks went off at once, was it? No wonder she ran!

I am thinking of ordering a Thunder Shirt for my little Lhattie (not the one in my avi; that is my puppy in law, Bella!). I got Lhattie 8 years ago when my then 18-year-old daughter was trying unsuccessfully to find her way in this great big world and I was heartbroken. Lhattie was supposed to be my "therapy dog," one who would never leave my side and loved to go for rides in the car with me, etc. Somehow she ended up being even more neurotic than me, lol! She really IS always by my side, but only in the house. She gets very anxious in the car (probably thinks she is going to the groomer every time) and I really want to help her feel better. She has done wonders for me and I want to give back! I have seen the Thunder Shirt infomercials and I have been considering one. Or maybe the rescue remedy drops? She HAS to get groomed but it really upsets her to go.

That's what they want.
Look up how much of your donation actually goes to the animals....less than 5%.(I thinks it's closer to 1%).
IF you want to help the animals, see what your local shelter needs, food/toys/bedding.

I absolutely agree. When I was little (about 5) there was an old lady lived next door to us. I considered her a grandma and often trotted over to see her. I lived in a small village, and she had relatives in that same small village. That wonderful lady had Nuthin'. No visitors, other than my mum, dad, grandparents (who lived directly across from us on the High Street) and me. Poor as a church mouse, especially by today's standards, but back then so were we all, we didn't notice it at all. Same old story. She died late evening. The very next morning her relatives showed up and stripped the place bare. No shame. I learnt my lesson about vultures very young.

Amen!!!! Sign up to volunteer, take photos to share on Facebook, even volunteer to help transport or foster. It saves lives...
