I'm sure it's been posted here numerous times, so I won't. But the marvelous Ms Wilson's Stairway to Heaven from Kennedy Center is one of the best performances I've ever heard. Nobody tries to cover such an iconic song and pulls it off. Except she did.

I was actually looking for that one but I got lazy. Or busy.

One of those (possibly both). ;)

That's the one I originally saw. When I went to look today, there's now a lot of versions and some with really bad sound where the vocal is pretty much lost in the mix. There's also a newly remastered version.

The one thing that's missing on this one is at the very beginning, when the drummer came to take his place - he was introduced and it's Jason Bonham, the son of the drummer when Zep was together. The three remaining members were not told he was going to play and their reaction when they saw him is pretty special. His father was so respected by the band that when he died young, they disbanded the band since they didn't think they could be anywhere near the same without him.

At the end, when "heaven" is sung and he looks up - then closes his eyes - it always hits me hard.

Jason, I believe, still tours with his "Zeppelin Experience" band. I caught them maybe 10 years back, here in Stamford. Having seen the real thing back in '77, I was surprised at how much I liked the cover guys.

Jason is what made it great. Not only is he a VERY good drummer, but he's also QUITE entertaining. Much more of a charismatic stage presence than his dad was. He's not nearly the RAW ANIMAL that Bonzo was, but the kid puts on one HECK of a show.

ALL thumbs up from THIS old Zep fan.

UPDATE: Twas 12 years ago (almost to the day!). I just looked it up.

And yes, they're still touring.

Ridgefield's only a hop/skip from here, but my life has changed some since then. No go for moi.
