I was never a big Metallica fan. I was kind of beginning to drift away from that style of metal about the time they hit it big. Plus Lars always bugged me for some reason. He liked to hear himself talk. Anyway, I saw them one time. A buddy of mine had two tickets so he invited me along. It was their Master of Puppets tour and they were backing up Ozzy. They played their full show and I thought Ozzy has his work cut out for him if he thinks he can beat that metal show. Not only did he, but you forgot about Metallica by the next day. Ozzy was in a league of his own.

Yeah, you’re not the first to say or feel that way about Lars..lol
That show is one I wished I could have gone too, I was just a wee bit too young at the time. I am a Metallica fan for Kill ‘Em All through Justice, and parts of the Black Album, although it was a bit too commercial. That concert would have absolutely slayed all the way through. I am a HUGE Ozzy fan and that era with Jake E Lee is often underrated and overshadowed by the Randy and Zakk years. I’ve listened to Ultimate Sun SO many times, it’s part of my driving music, and Jake is freaking awesome. I guess the following track is a deep cut, but it rocks and Jake’s powers are on full display….

I don't think Lars' campaign against Napster made him many friends (similar to Tipper Gore's labels, in some ways), but it's tough to argue against his logic, now that we've seen the results.

On the other hand, "All that" gave us some truly marvelous independent artists, which we might never have known if not for the internet.

Musically, I've always liked them. Their Symphony concert remains one of my favorite Live albums of all time.

To paraphrase The Duchess (Ms. Hungerford), "Music is in the ear of the beholder".

Most people who downloaded music would never have went out and bought it. So it was no skin off the artist’s behind. In fact, it probably helped them. Gave them exposure they never would of had otherwise. It’s kind of like the era of sports teams who did home game blackouts. All they did was hurt themselves.

Too many friends of mine would disagree, as they made it very clear to me that I was an idiot for continuing to buy my music. What can I say - I didn't travel in the best of circles, which made sense given who I was.

In the meantime, a new day awaits!
