Awww. That's sad! I wasn't home when Kottyn died either. I think he had Kidney Failure. I was out of town and my friend came over to check on him and feed him and found him. I felt bad that she had to clean it all up for me.

And my dh hates small dogs. If I walked in the door with one he would send me walking right back out the door with it. Would be funny though.

What breed is Burnie? She is a cutie! I love big lovable dogs!:D

She's a pit mix of sorts...but god forbid you mention that to Allstate for renter's insurance. Because being a pit mix she is black listed. I told the agent that they were being "Breedist" I mean look at her... that is all she pretty much does is lounge on the couch. She doesn't even bark. She whispers...Her indoor voice as I call it....I really would like to get a dna test for her. Actually she's on the small size just lil under 50 pounds and her head is to my knee. She looks bigger in the pics then she really is.. I guess it's true about cameras adding 10 lbs..it affects dogs too.. :D

It was hard to tell her size from the pics, I was trying to use a couch cusion as a reference and was guessing in the medium range.

We have a chow mix (in the top 5 of biters) but the humane society had her as a corgi mix so that's what we told insurance. Hey, it's what we were told. :) And heck, she doesn't bark or bite, she's the sweetest most submissive dog you could imgine!

Ohhh, DNA testing! You just hit my hot topic! We're on our 4th test. We've done the 3 USA tests and sent a sample to the UK a couple months ago. They say results should be ready in Oct. I think the tests are fun and fascinating if you have the money to spend on them!

And how old, and how did you get her. :) Details, we want details!

I had her since she was a puppy. There was an ad in Uncle Henry's for puppies. I was just getting a place on my own (finalizing a divorce)..I always wanted a dog.. the ex was dead set against it. I don't have any children so she is the baby girl of the house. She is my first dog.... I learned a lot about being a dog owner (i.e don't leave clothes on the floor..etc). She's 4 years old now...and I guess I've done ok.. she's a good doggie, no more destructive puppy issues for a long long time...I'm not .... about her being on the couch. As the dogs my family members had they were always allowed. Something about taking a nap and having a dog snuggling with ya is very comforting.

You've done great with her, having been a new doggie mom and all! My baby (no kids either) is my first and we've had her just over 3 yrs. Amazing what you learn as a doggie mom. It seems like it would be easy but it's not.. they can't talk!

And yea, I don't restrict my dog either. She's on the couch, on the bed... I jealous that you have a snuggler!!

How accurate were the tests....how much do they cost?

Canine Heritage® Breed Test is $99 right now, we paid $70 last year I think. This is a cheek swab test done at home. This was the least accurate (in our minds) but the most interesting results. We had to do it twice. First time was inconclusive, 2nd time tt came back Belgian Turvuren, Bernese Mtn Dog and Boxer. Which, according to our cousin who is an active breeder, is entirely possible based on our dog.

Dog DNA Test | Mixed Breed Analysis | Canine Breed Testing ran us about $210, but part of that was the vet visit b/c a vet takes a blood sample and sends it in. This was the most accurate in our view and it came back "chow in the mix." Said she was too much of a mutt to tell anything else, and her parents were likely mutts themselves. We agree with this b/c our dog has chow coat, chow height, spotted tongue, and chow characteristics (ie, very cat like, no barking, solitary, etc.).

Dog DNA Test for the Assessment of Dog Ancestry - Free DNA Test for Pure Breed Dogs! This is the latest one in the UK for which we're waiting on results. My brother paid for it, I think it was over $200. Also a cheek swab that is sent it, but an entirely different type of test. They map the DNA then give us results that we will use to compare to their breed database to determine the closest matches.

Whew! So yeah, cheapest is $100, but we LOVE our baby. We'd like to know the breed b/c it's what we want to recuse going foward. And we're intensely curious. :D
