I had no idea there was a way a person could collect their deceased spouse's SS check. When my grandfather died, her husband's SS check was terminated. But thankfully she had his private pension to collect.
He was alive when I started collecting on his. Maybe I was eligible to collect on his because I wasn't eligible myself? IDK

I'm not collecting it in his name. It's been in my name since he died.

The ability to collect a spouses's SSDI is based on the length of the marriage, and whether you have your own yet, I THINK. Unless you have under age kids, then you can get it.

I THINK you are allowed to collect whatever is higher, and I'm not sure what other factors. I know my mom collected on her husband unless she finally switched to her own.

The rules have changed a lot, it used to be you could collect on TWO deceased spouses had you been married long enough and a bunch of other things, but they changed loopholes.

Pensions et al; it depends if they are considered "earnings' or not and that depends on a bunch of complicated factors, like private disability usually is not considered "earnings" unless you had to pay for it yourself, while pensions are considered "earnings" and you are allowed to "earn" up to a certain threshold in every state, and after that it is deducted from your SSDI or SSI check.

You are also taxed twice on Social security it's the most regressive tax out there. It's still not the worst social net in the land, but it's been repeatedly gutted, year after year.

I'd have to go the SSI website to check all the exact amounts not gonna do that TODAY. They are usually fairly helpful if you call.

Just be ready to wait on the phone for two hours.

Social Security is one thing that is very confusing. My Mom never worked (well a little part time job being a substitute teacher for a short time). My Dad is alive. She draws SS off him and he gets his. I never will understand it. I have learned from others that it's worth a call to the SS office to make sure you are maximizing the pay out. I just learned from a coworker that you can be full aged eligible and get SS while still working a job.

    It's income/tax based I believe and I don't know much else.

I am less optimistic it's a student loan thing. I am in default (I had no idea, actually because I got the default letter with every single other one so I missed the deadline.) My high credit score is now really low which mucks up our plans completely. I am going to pay the stupid 400 dollars today by phone and beg them if there is anything I can do to remediate but it will not be in time I don't think.

So now, I don't know where we are going to go or what we are going to do. Really if we keep renting now it will have to be forever, unless I try to get a job immediately which I just can't do.

My PIP plan is for a month; there is nothing in it about it not expiring if I am out sick so I SUPPOSE I could take a month, and if they try to shove another one in my face, refuse to sign it. But I'm not sure this is a good idea at all, either.

But again, they would find SOMETHING. So who knows, etc. And, I'm just not seeing happiness and future bliss for me at the moment.

IDK. I need to stop shoving pieces of paper plopped down in front of me, my boss is just excellent at intimidation.

Have not heard back from the sis yet. I am getting my FMLA done though so that's good. Hopefully there is a way to make it open ended. Etc.

I don't want to go back and I don't think it's smart. I will call my student loan place but I thought I was discharged but something about quarters and stuff caused it to come back. They couldn't find me, so I was like 20 days from default anyway. Sigh.

Call your sis. She's a lawyer so she gets busy. You will at least feel better for talking to her.

So true to call ss yourself. Better yet(when able) is to make an appt and talk to a specialist face to face. They are kinda a captive audience at that point so you can get all the questions answered and not feel rushed like they are trying to get you off the phone, LOL

Can you imagine just how confusing it can be by getting a ss check while also paying into the ss while still working. Thats enough to make anyones head spin. LOL But if you are still paying in while getting some of it back it reduces the ss amount in the fund somewhat. smh....

That's exactly how I collected He got his and I collected on his. After he died I just got his but minus Plan B because I don't qualify for medicaid.

I read that the ss checks are on the 2nd wave of checks but have not yet see an actual date for them yet. But they said it would be soon.

I see now. After some digging, it's called SS for survivors or something like that. I guess my GM did not qualify for that since she was collecting my GP's pension or for some other reason.

Possibly. I don't know anything about pensions.

This is what I found out about stimulus checks and found it here.

Where’s Your Stimulus Check? Here’s How You’ll Be Able To Track It Down

According to an announcement from the IRS, a new system will allow anyone waiting for what they refer to as Economic Impact Payments to track their money online. Using this tool, anyone awaiting a stimulus check can see what day their payment is scheduled and how it will be posted — whether by paper or electronically.

As of April 17, when the new tracking system is officially rolled out, anyone can access a status update by going to the existing Economic Impact Payments page. Currently, the official IRS web page includes a “Get My Payment” portal section with a bullet point titled “Check your payment status.” According to reports, this is where the tracking feature will live and be accessible throughout the stimulus package payment plan.

It says if you are full retirement age it does not reduce your payout. It does reduce if you are not full retirement age.

I don't think I can work until I'm 67. Not gonna do it. ARGH That would be 13 more years! We'll see though.

No, I'm not going to call my sister, she and I both like, know I have time. Nothing she is going to say is going to reassure me or not if she hasn't gotten to my stuff yet. It would be more reassuring to just get my FMLA in and approved, and whatever and also, if she says to file for this and it was unfair, I'm just going to organize and dump in the court o EEOC because life's too short. They can tell me if I have a reasonable issue, and worst case, I'm just going to implore the husband we get a small trailer and park it on our Tucson property for now.: Our neighbor did that one time for a pal who was like, really noisy and stayed several months. We have a homeowner's association which states, "This HOA is free forever and cannot be changed in perpetuity; please do what you want, within reason but I'm going to guess most things are pretty reasonable so if you think you are on the edge, please talk to your neighbors and work it out."

The guy behind us was a hoarder, and also had a salmon farm for awhile. Another neighbor like, built a "party shack" that was up high but was not sufficiently reinforced in ANY fashion he used single 2x4s to raise up "the shack" so it did not last long but was entertaining when it did.

So well, oy. We will see. It's kind of..... If I have to back to Tucson and settle in a trailer I will not be thrilled, I also will not die, and at least we own a PLOT to which utilities are connected, which we can use. So, it is what it is. Going back to Tucson is not my idea scenario but there are complete limits to how much help I am willing to ask for from my mom, so that is what it will be.

Well the loan folks contacted me and said like, student debt is not that big a deal, it's more income to debt ratio or something. I'm using the top rated unsecured loan place and she was like, "it is more like debt to income ratio." Uh huh we'll see.

But well, whatever, IDK exactly what will come but I'm like, just continuing to move forward. Yoga today again and well, just dealing with what IS, etc.

LOL guess I need to clarify a bit more. The fund I was talking about was the ss fund itself, not a reduced amount to payee. If you think about it, You are receiving full benefits from ss. You are still working therefore you are still paying into the ss fund with each paycheck. That is what I would find confusing.
