That's funny because I had it in my recipes spreadsheet as your recipe and that @hittman liked it. So which is it??
But, origin aside, that's one I mixed a couple of days ago.
So, how long a steep?

    It’s hitt’s recipe. I’d give it a week.

Are they capable of mixing for themselves if they had the supplies?
I don't think so. Not everyone is talented as us. :) My SIL is 71 and bro is 60. She has major arthritis. MY brother is not to bright. (Sadly, his mentation is lacking).

I was just curious thinking it would take the burden off of you if you could give them supplies and they mixed for themselves.

Thanks but I'll pass on visiting Florida or the Gulf during a hurricane. I like to live on the edge but that seems like an edge too far. I've been through a tornado up this way and you are 100% correct there usually is little to zero warning. At least folks can prepare for a hurricane. I was also in LA on a business trip in '94 during the Northridge earthquake (6.7 or 6.8). After that experience I decided that I do not like the Earth moving like that under my feet.

I would rather go scuba diving with sharks (not Great Whites) or extreme sky diving than go through a hurricane another tornado or earthquake. :)
I lived in the San Francisco/San Jose area for several years a bunch of years ago. The one earthquake I experienced was not a major one. I was fairly new to the area when it hit. I was in my office when it began vibrating and my secretary ran over and we stood in the doorway, assumedly protected by the door structure, and she hugged me as we stood there. It soon passed without major damage. Nice hug though. She was a sweetie pie.
I didn't like mother earth on which I stand to be so unstable and unsafe. For me, it's more unsettling than what comes from the sky.

I've got them for a pie crust, but I like buttery bready things quite a bit so they'll probably stick around.
I recently used OOO pie crust and VT croissant (or was it WF... kinda trapped in the computer room for a bit... I'll check later) Worked great together.
