@Zazie I also found a nice HP at Sam's Club that comes with 2 year HP Care Pack and 2 year accidental damage coverage at $599 but the RAM is 12gb not 16. Don't know if you have a membership or any interest on the 12gb (meets everything else) but I'll give the link just in case..
I'm not a member, so . . .

I don't want to get a Dell, but so far it has one that most closely matches my mother's specs. Though it ain't going for the six hundred bucks she was hoping for.

I've been looking for a 15-16" display, no-touch matte screen, 16Gb RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 11 Home. Integrated video is fine. Intel Core I5 or I7.
    How about this one?

Have you looked at Asus? I had a Zenbook for many years and loved it. At the time I bought it, touch screens were new and extra $$$ so I passed on that feature. The standard screen was lovely to look at and I do nasty tiny spreadsheets nearly all day at work. This model that seems to fit your specs Vivobook on Amazon. Bad news is new is $800 but there are used at less $ if she'd consider them. There may also be better deals out there on the Asus. It may be worth looking around/watching for sales. EDIT: Just saw Kat56's post -- her link has an i5 processor, mine has an i7 which may not be worth the difference. See deals are out there!

My BIL loved Lenovo for years until IBM sold it and he wasn't happy with them afterwards (he's a geek). I was considering one anyway when I had to replace the Asus. However, the company my brother works for was bought by Dell so, sorry Dell haters, I now have an XPS13. It was an offer I couldn't pass up! ;)
My monitor is an Asus. Thirteen years old and going strong. That's my only experience with their stuff, though I've read good things.

I've had two Dell computers. The first did great for more than ten years. The hard drive of the second failed just before the warranty expired, but after that was replaced, the computer did fine for, again, ten years. My mother, though, has had bad luck: a laptop that started screwing up within a few years, and an all-in-one that was very erratic from the start and now isn't working (five years old, which is too young to die, in my opinion}. She is now leery of Dell.

Good morning. I haven’t had a Dell laptop but we have used Dell desktop computers at work and at home. My last one at work was probably 8-10 years old before replacing it. The new company got us Dell mini computers and so far so good. I can’t believe how small they are. No more tower on my desk.

I have a dell as well, xps15. I got a touch screen because it was the one with 100% adobe rgb gamut. I have a zenbook I bought for the wife that is nice also though I'd say the dell is a bit more solid feeling. Note on the xps, if your touchpad becomes hard to click on the L&R buttons, the battery may be swelling from age. Happened to mine, easy to replace but the bottom has to come off.

    Morning, mixers.

Rain continues :) As is usual, other parts of the Sound are getting more than us, but we're nearing 1 - 1/2" since it started. Happy frogs :)

My tower is a Dell, love it. Our laptops are, currently, a Lenovo and and Acer, and we've had Asus in the past. All work well, no issues.

The Dell and the Asus had the least crap-ware from the factory.

The crew are busy installing our new sewer grinder system. They started at 7.00 this morning disposing of the old septic tank. They emptied it out, filled it with gravel and sand, and used a backhoe to crush it down. That last part was loud. They put a small shovel attachment on the hoe and banged it repeatedly on the old tank. It made the whole house shake. They had to dig a hole 8' deep and 10' across to set the grinder unit and all the pipework. Now everything is hooked up, they just have to fill in the hole and they disappeared an hour ago, for lunch I guess. We can't go out because they have 3 large vehicles and a dozer parked in the top of our driveway.

I've been out for a couple of hours taking dirt from the pile by the hole and using it to fill in divots around the yard. They said there would be plenty of spare dirt because of all the stuff they installed in the hole.
