If her old laptop is still working for her and she's happy with her ancient tiny flat screen??? Maybe leave things as they are???

The old laptop is wonky and on its last legs.
Learning the newest Windows OS might irritate the heck outta her, and then add Chromecast dongle and sw training and some basic troubleshooting. A bridge too far???
Windows 11 shouldn't be too hard for her--it seems to be not all that different from Windows 10--and she mastered a Firestick, so I think she'll be able to handle a Chromecast okay. (The reason for switching from the Firestick to Chromecast is that it'strickier casting from Google Drive with the former, because Amazon and Google are little brats that don't play well together.)
If it was my Mom I would buy her a Vizio 40" smart TV with built-in Chromecast. It's $168 at Amazon. Probably free shipping if ya have Prime (IDK).
If I bought my mother a television without her prior approval, she might murder me.

One of her quirks is she hates larger screens. The all-in-one that just died had a 30" screen, and that was bigger than she likes. Getting it out of her living room almost made up for losing the computer.

There is a Chrome cast device that has Google tv on it. Similar to the firestick. Might be able to download drive right on it.

It makes sense, but unfortunately it tells me something I already knew: you can multitask if you're casting what is called a Chrome enabled site. Unfortunately, what I can't confirm is whether Google Drive is Chrome enabled, so that one can cast a video in one's GD from one tab and continue to faff around on the web in other tabs. You'd think it would be--it's all Google, after all--but I've yet to find it specifically stated. I do see that Google Photos is in the list to which you linked, and there is a way to cast videos in Google Drive using Google Photos. Unfortunately, this method requires a tab more labor than my old mother will be able to tolerate, I suspect. There's a limit to what her old noggin can manage these days.

Thank you, John. It's kind of you to dip your toe in these murky waters for me.
    @Zazie does this help?

Thank you, but I already know how to cast videos in Google Drive using Chromecast. What I can't determine is whether it will be possible to surf the web while doing so, as it is when casting from so-called Chrome-enabled sites.

Sorry if that came off as cranky. It isn't meant to. I'm just worn out. It's nice of you to try to help.

    Morning, mixers.

First night below 40 in a while :) Guess the guessers got it right, clear skies today. Rain said to come back tomorrow.

Plan is a "pleasure" town run, boss wants to visit the bookstores.

Honestly, I'm just hoping the laptop--when she finally agrees to let me get the thing for her--has good enough speakers that she'll be happy watching shows on it. The laptop screen will be barely smaller than her television's, and she'll be able to set it right next to her, so it'll actually be an improvement, picturewise. But if the speakers are lousy, she'll cast because she can crank up the television's volume pretty high.

Getting confused here. If what she wants is to be able to easily hear what she's watching, why is there a need to be able to cast AND do other things at the same time?

    Somewhere between here and there
I’m going to run up to Dunkin Donuts and get my wife her favorite donuts. Might stop and get some flowers too. The place I usually have flowers delivered from has gotten pretty expensive. It was going to be 120 this time. I can get something nice from the floral department at our local store much cheaper and as nice.

Because sometimes you get bored with what you're watching and want to poke around somewhere else for a while and then pop back into the show. It would be nice to be able to do that by pausing rather than having to stop and then restart the cast.

Donuts and flowers sounds great. I'm sure she'll enjoy them.

I suspect one could pause the stream, and not stop it. Of course, what's then on the computer screen would also likely go to the TV...
