Unfounded health concerns regarding PET bottles
"PET bottles will leach out cancer-causing substances known as DEHP and/or DEHA."
  1. Some reports have specifically suggested that common plasticisers, DEHP and/or DEHA, can leach from PET bottles into the liquids they hold, particularly with reuse.
  2. Plasticisers are additives that increase the flexibility and elasticity of plastics. However, DEHP and DEHA are not needed for PET production. Therefore, the allegation is unfounded. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified DEHA as not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3) in 2000 and DEHP as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) in 2011.
"PET bottles will release dioxins during freezing."
  1. Dioxins are a group of persistent environmental pollutants resulting from various industrial processes and combustion activities. Dioxins are toxic and can cause cancer.
  2. There is no reasonable scientific basis for expecting dioxins to be present in PET bottles in the first place. Moreover, dioxins cannot be formed in freezing temperatures.

I'm inclined not to believe much of what the FDA says nowadays, personally. The info. I have about the various plastic types, their uses, any concerns with them, etc., didn't come from 1 of those ridiculous hoax emails that circulates. It's from many environmental websites and others. I choose to believe them over the FDA. But...that's just me. :)

Everyone should do their own research and decide what makes them most comfortable. Older info states that PET can leech chemicals from the plastic into liquids if they are reused. Research from late last year says that isn't true. The American Chemistry Council states that is okay to reuse these bottles. Most of the articles, both old and new, are in regards to reusing water bottles which are meant as single use by the companies that bottle water. Of course, they want us to throw away the bottles and buy new, full ones. I think the plastic crisis is the reason for the new research that has found PET bottles to be safe for reuse.

My friend has a PhD in Chemistry and works for a government agency that runs chemical tests that are used by many agencies. Her agency has found PET to be safe for reuse. I don't think the FDA does much research of its own.;)

Again, everyone should do their own reading on the subject and decide for themselves.

I'm taking the advice I was given and said the sft's can wait.We leave for Arizona in 3 days and I'm busy checking and rechecking my lists.Going to my daughters Friday morning to check packing and try to make sure I have everything before I zip the luggage. Going through customs should be interesting.;)

The sft's will all be ready to try when I return plus all the final trys will be ready also. I'll have my work cut out for me. After I work my way through all those I'll finish mixing new sft's that have been waiting. After that it is my plan to kick myself in the .... and do a couple new mixes.

Wow, thanks everyone for your opinions on the PET bottles. I am so confused and while not overly concerned since I reuse the ones from vendors, I canceled my order earlier and I will just save the money and use what I have or reuse what I have as the case may be.

Vendor bottles are PET, just so you know.

Hey, @PJReid, I wanted to thank you for the idea of testing creams with fruits. I'll be able to repurpose a bunch of my fruit/berry sfts this way. And I'm wondering if I could then test bakery flavors in the two-flavor mixes (although perhaps it's better to test bakeries on their own?).

Just my opinion but I would say you should try the bakery flavors solo before you mix anything with them.

If I want to test the effect that three different creams have on a recipe, I pick a dessert recipe (like a Raspberry Frozen Yogurt) that calls for a cream - something that I already know I like. I mix 30mls of the mix, without the cream, divide it into three 10ml bottles and add in the appropriate percentage of the cream I am testing to each 10ml batch. Does that make sense?

Yup. And matches what you said earlier in this thread, which I duly copied into my ever-growing collection of pointers as soon as I read it.

Some vendors still bottle their eliquids in LDPE or PP bottles, too. So you may also have some of those.

What I wonder is: Which of the bottles are soft and good for squeezing? PET, PE, LDPE, HDPE, . . . ?

LDPE and PP (polypropylene) are the 2 that are easy to squeeze, IMO, with a consistent easy squeeze being possible with both (no sudden give like you mentioned). If I'm thinking right about the "give", that's the PET bottles that do that, at least to me, when flavorings come in them and I dispense a quantity to fill a smaller bottle for someone. They give and then make a pop or crack sound as they go back to their original shape.

HDPE can be rigid (not squeezable at all), or slightly squeezable (like the gallon jugs PG & VG comes in from some vendors).

Isn't LDPE the most squeezable? My bum thumb prefers easy squooshing.

LDPE is most, and PP next, IMO.

    Somewhere between here and there
I got the Dripping recipe mixed tonight. I hope I like it. I had to order most of the flavors to make it. I haven’t even thought about putting away the flavors from my two chefs orders or this one from bcf.
