I would continue trying as well.

Many years ago we had a nice big tree in our yard. It was there when we bought the house. I can't remember what kind of tree it was. It started dying slowly. Same symptoms as yours. I did the same as what you are currently doing.

We had an arborist come over. S.E. Wisconsin has clay soil, which is not good for whatever kind for tree it was. He looked at the tree roots and noted they were wrapping themselves around each other. The tree was basically choking itself off. It could not be saved. My neighbor and I eventually cut it down. We used parts of it for a fence. The rest was firewood.

Some trees do not do well in clay soil here. Others thrive.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Don't hate me but I cannot seem to kill any hedges, arborvitae type shrubs. I have had these or boxwoods at EVERY house I have owned and just do not like them. The house we just sold had about 40 giant as in never been trimmed hedges, size of trees.

I have cut, sprayed shrub killer and finally had some pulled out with a truck....they ALL came back in some form. It once took me a couple years to kill a very small maple tree that was in a bad place.

We used to have a berry tree that was right next to our driveway. The berries were good (blackberries). When they dropped, if you didn't power hose them onto the grass right away they would stain the driveway. Drove me nuts, PITA!!!

I always wanted to get rid of it but she loved using the berries for baked goods (muffins, cakes etc.). Me? I don't bake, so about a year after she passed away I cut the tree down. No more mess!!!

I still have a bunch of old tall trees in the yard. No more berry trees though.

This week the city will take anything left at the curbside no charge. It's the annual spring cleaning thing. I'm tossing "stuff" . . . yep.

Couple other things to take care of and then I will head back up north.
Didn’t know you were back in the city, Should have known since you mentioned a dr. appointment the other day.

    We arrived late Sunday.

Been tossin' stuff to the curbside for the city to take. LOLz, a woman pulled up while I was taking some things out. Asked if it was okay to take a few things. Why yes, take it all if you want!!! She did take some stuff. One persons junk is always another persons treasure!!!

There are things I will haul off to Goodwill eventually. Didn't want to do a rummage sale, those are such a royal PITA.

The local Veterans place came and picked up some furniture and a bed yesterday. They help all the vets with whatever items they need.

I'm getting down to the very bare essentials!!!

I let some of my yard get overgrown for a few years. Weed trees and vines everywhere. Once they get established it's impossible to kill them by cutting, I tried for 20 years. They just put out new shoots from the roots. Last year I cleaned it all up. Got some stuff called Tordon. You cut the tree down low and paint it on the cut end. It kills the roots 100% of the time. It does tend to kill any other roots that are in contact, lost a few bushes that way.

I even used stump killer, didn't finish them off. I have decided I have a green shrub thumb.

At the current house, we have some kind of vine all along the fence line. I had it all cleaned out when we moved in (by a professional) and it is back!! Going to try to get weed killer sprayed today while it isn't raining.

    Stupid vines. :-x

My neighbors fence line had some kind of climbing vine. Last year I helped her remove it. I used BroAdvanced Brush Killer. Sprayed it all along the fence line, both sides, soaked. That worked. Knowing how persistent vines are, I'll spray again this week.

    ETA: It's BioAdvanced Brush Killer!!!
