Well, put my zmax between the couch cushions last night for a while. When I went back to get it after a while. The flashi was burning hot! Firing at 6v. Well you know what happened to the wick... Nothing. Nothing at all!. Still white between the wraps. It was still hot 5 min later. Vaped excellent afterwards and still is. All that happened was it over wicked from the tank a little with the heat.

I bet it vapes better afterwards since it was retaining the heat lol.

I thought I was having an issue today.. Was gettin some dryish hits... Then I realized the temperature dropped from 70s to upper 40s. My tank wicks had to be adjusted since my vg is thickening. Running just mesh straws now on the flashi; and all is well. Once it gets near freezing I will add some h2o and/or saline solution ~3-5% so it keeps wicking 100 vg well from the tank. When I'm out in freezing temps I like the saline because it won't freeze. Also some nice benefits from it too in the winter... It's actually supposed to snow here tonight.

So a friendly reminder to those in areas with dropping temps..

See post 434. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/coil-builds/477072-bsds-vertical-hollow-core-micro-coil-build-aro-evod-protank-heads-44.html#post14288247

Used rayon with spaced coil and it is PERFECT! Really loving this Rayon!

For some reason it makes dripping work so much better also.

I'm glad you brought this up. I washed and rebuilt my dripper today, and figured I would give spaced coils a try. My issue is that, when I tighten the screws down on my RDA, or make any adjustments whatsoever, the coils want to lose that nice cylindrical shape; one end in particular wants to raise above the rest. I fear this will create a hotspot, since that last quarter wrap probably won't be tight against the rayon, once everything settles.

So, for anyone building spaced coils in an RBA/RDA: How do you keep the nice cylindrical shape, with no part of the coil too far from where the rayon will be? I spaced my wrap out on the screwdriver and tightened down with the screwdriver in as well. Is it possible or beneficial to install the tight microcoil, then space out the wraps once the leads are secured?

I only installed this coil a few minutes ago, and it's done fine so far. I'm just afraid that it's a little too wonky to continue working alright.

Yeah that issue sucks with screws. A pair of small washers with coil in between would probably prevent most of that. You can space out afterwards with 32, maybe 30, but I had no luck with 28. Your best bet is leave the bit in the coil. Get it tight, the use something to form that leg back to where it belongs . I use a flat jewelers screwdriver or tweezers to for the leg back. I also hold the leg in place while I tighten it, this works many times too.

If the doctor orders a little extra TLC, that's what the coil will receive!

Yeah, I'm using 28 gauge, so I'll try and bend it back into shape at some point. I should probably have tried before getting the wick in, but I forgot I might even have an issue with this.

Either way, I'll play around. I was just curious if the pros had some super genius technique I couldn't imagine :)

I just did my first spaced coil that I have done in a long time, I used a 6-32 screw to wrap it and put it on my RDA and it worked great.

I had thought about using a screw to get even space coils but never got around to doing it. Now that you say it worked good I am going to give it a go.

Sure sounds like the best way to get even spacing with out having to fiddle with it.

I've been giving spaced micro coils a try. The vapes a little different than with a contact coil, but I'm adjusting. My dirty NETs have been gunking noticeably slower, which is why I was interested. I've just been wrapping the coil tight like I normally do, then stretch it out on the nail, then after squeezing it compact again it springs out with fairly even spacing.

Here's a couple pics; the first one I just built and the second pic is the previous build that had been vaped on. Spaces aren't perfect, but coil heats evenly so good enough for me. Both are 28ga Kanthal.

Interesting, Jerms. On your pics, the right side of your coil has that behavior I'm nervous about - the coil comes away from the rayon a bit. Clearly if it doesn't get too hot in situations like this, there's nothing to worry about. It looks like it's working pretty well, so kudos!

The weird thing for me has been that this spaced coil has a lot less snap crackle pop. Still plenty of vapor, it just doesn't sound like a Rice Krispies commercial anymore (at least the volume's been turned way down).

I started giving spaced coils a try because my DIY juice had been considerably more harsh lately, same recipes. I might have to lower the nic level (12 watts and 24mg juice never bothered me before, but it seems like it's starting to). 70% VG and no other changes, so I'll just lower the nic.

I'm digging the spaced coils, I'll try them until I've got a reason not to. JeremyR, trend-setter as always!

Yeah, I could fix that if I made the coil as wide as the post holes, but don't see a need as the legs are still pretty short. On devices that require longer legs I'd be more comfortable with a contact micro as they keep the heat centered and legs cooler more than a spaced micro. No issues here though, at 1 ohm on a mech I'm not putting a lot of power through it.

You've been around a lot longer than I have, so I appreciate hearing your thoughts on the matter. I'm running about 12 watts on a VTR with my tiny Trident RDA, so I'm getting even less power. I was just curious if I'd see any issues, switching from the contact micros that retain their shape better. It sounds like it shouldn't be an issue, then.

Man, I totally forgot about when temperature gets cold eliquid in the tank gets cold and does not wick as well :( Last winter (I am outside alot with my animals and chores) I used to keep my hand around my tank to help stop my eliquid from getting as cold :) It really helps! On the days that it was in the negatives outside it did not work as well....lol......for one I had to have gloves on and two it was just so cold and it was hard to prevent!
