How about that little butane torch to burn the gunk off. Just have to be careful not to get too hot or melt any insulators in the process.
That's worse than dry firing it as it certainly will go over 700C

Next dna 40 revision should have a cleaning mode at 1200F so you can burn the coil without annealing it :)

I'm pretty sure 600F and a toothbrush will clean it.

Haven't tried it yet, I just brushed the gunk off cold and it went shiny. I will probably change wick this weekend just so I can try some dry fire cleaning. I'll let you know :)

I wonder if the gunk your getting at the lower temps with temp protection is leaving the gunk softer and not as baked on as you would get without temp protection and make it easier to clean off?

But then again I guess it would probably depend what's used in a juice for flavoring. I got some Queen's Biscuit from 28daysvape and this stuff is thick and sticky like maple syrup, it gunk's my coils black with just three ml's at 12 watts, the gunk bridges the gaps in the spaced coil. I've never seen a juice that will string off a dropper tube like this stuff does, but the flavor is oh so good, it's like biting into a delicate lemon tea cookie.

Makes sense to me!

You saying your QB juice is like what I tried to describe HERE? Darndest thing I've ever seen- this has the consistency of honey and being so thick and stringy I haven't tried it thinking there must be something wrong w/it. Kudos for you trying it, though. Braver than me!

If your wick density is right any buildup doesn't seem to stick to the coil. If density is way off gunk will stick to the coil because the wick is restricted to almost cotton performance.

But 180ml no gunk buildup with 100vg arabic tobacco is pretty amazing with a standard vv at 6v 328mw/mm².

It never had any appearent gunk layer. When I dry hit it, it would get a burnt taste from the juice dry burnt on the coil. This would sometimes go away after a number of hits. If it was too bad the taste would last too long.

Now if I run it dry and get burnt hit I just drip on the coil touch/ slide around the circumference with a paper towel or god forbid qtip. To absorb the burnt juice. The paper towel absorbs black juice. Redrip and its back to normal!

(I don't want to contaminate the coil with cotton, I use paper towel folded.)

Now my last test wick, super tight, did build gunk and it did not just absorb or slide off. It was the first gunk I've seen in about a year. Lol

Well I can assure you its capable, my builds are much hotter than both of those, always.

I do appreciate you posting the stats, I use those and should have been posting mine too!

My last wick and coil that went 180ml was on a stacked 350 zmax v3 @ 6v

28g
9wraps / 2mm
1.3 ohm
Heat flux @ 24w - * 328 MW/mm²
Heat capacity - 19.2 mj/k¹

As you can see much hotter and fast heat up

My favorite is the parallel 32

1.3 ohm
8 wraps (2) /2mm
Heat flux @ 24w - *329 MW/mm²
Heat capacity * 12 mj/k¹

It is noticeably much faster to heat up than the 28... Can't imagine 50mj/k²

Oh here's the //32 heat up
Last one is about 2-3 seconds

Hybrid of contact coil and spaced coil? Make up my mind, lol

That's exactly it! I didn't notice it until after I vaped it, that's the down side of vaping by the light of the computer. It's damn good, guess I'll be the guinea pig, if I suddenly stop posting then maybe you better steer clear of it LoL. I wonder if they aren't using some kind of sugar?

I wondered about the sweetener (if they use it) myself. Thought maybe they had used honey but I don't get a honey taste, per se. I guess vaping it shouldn't bother me too much if I'm willing to put it in my mouth! :p

Gonna try it today. I have a fresh 1.1 ohm dual coil build in my Plume Veil ready and waiting- I don't know what it would wick like from a tank. What atty are you using?

A Plume :) It's wicking fine, just the fast gunking. I tried the Queen's Cake after you posted this morning, the first couple hits mixed with the QB that was already in there was rather good. I like the QB better but the cake was OK, I'm just not a big fan of cinnamon flavored juice.

ETA: I'm running a single coil, 32 ga spaced coil, 1.4 ohm at 12 watts. And rayon of course!

Not sure. I'm vaping at 400F now (gave up on Celsius as the board just goes postal on me) and I only vape 3 juices:

Pure Ice Menthol (70% VG)
Heisenberg (45% VG)
Jugo Diablo (48% VG)

Heisenberg is blue/green, the rest is translucid. Except for the first, the others are complex flavors (anise, licorice, fruit, menthol, absinthe, etc)

Gunking never has been a problem for me.

I don't know.. Its a spaced, spaced parallel. All the wraps are spaced, no contact here. :). Parallel's can be tricky, everything has to be even or it will hot leg or spot. One time I had one that was fully evenly spaced all the way, but its hard because the legs have to be set just right or one coil offsets... Lately I've been taking the easy route compromise with 28g single.

Alcohol and soft toothbrush, rinsed wick and deck does pretty well. NO heat at all! I have pulled the wick and used a drill bit to keep formed, 'though.

Ok guys

Forget cleaning the coil at 600F

It cleans the gunk alright (turns light gray) but it becomes brittle!

I tried to adjust the coil a little and it snapped without effort near the leg. I thought it was just coincidence but when I removed it and pulled it apart, it started to snap at every wrap.

Just use the rayon as long as you can and then replace everything or just replace the rayon without dry firing it.

I will just replace the coil. Tempered ni200 is easy to work with.

Here a pic of how it looked when I opened the chimney:

There was nothing wrong with it. I just decided to test the cleaning process.

After becoming aware of the brittleness, I made a new setup :

373527c804a623e3202eaf6a68bc762f.jpg

Vaping great at 400F right now :)

It's a 0.15 ohm, 10 wrap, 2.5 id, 28ga ni200 tempered coil.

EDIT: with the above pictured setup, at 400F, it maxes out at 38W with a medium draw and goes to 40W without ever hitting temp protection with a harder draw. Both are too much for me (I just got the hiccups) but it's nice to know the wick is providing enough juice even at 40w :)

I'm really curious to hear what you think about Knight's Honor- "Sweet, fluffy vanilla banana custard". I hope it's better for you than it was for me foob. Hopefully with the additional steeping it'll be okay, but I'm almost afraid to retry it!

I haven't gotten to that one yet, I'm giving some of them more time to steep. I did taste is last week and it tasted funky, I'll let you know when I get to that one.

It's my weapon of choice too but not at 40W... I usually stay at 15W... I just got carried away with the wick...

Anyway, nothing two spoons of sugar won't fix in 10 minutes.

Heh, didn't get such a nic rush since demonstrating that a stock kfl could be vaped at 25W :D
