I bought a pack tonight but haven't tried it yet. Next to it, there was a huge bag of "polyester filter fiber" for $3. I asked the clerk what the difference was between the two. He said the fluval was packed and pressed, while the filter fiber was looser. He said if you use the fiber in a tank, it needs to be put in a mesh bag so it doesn't come apart.

My question....would the filter fiber be able to be stuffed into the cart and used as the pads are? Or would that just not work?

this is definitely the best solution for the thrifty vaper, but I still worry that there might be something in the fish tank filler that might be bad. I was hoping someone would hit on a really cool natural solution, because it is the route I want to go. I never did get to try natural sea sponge.

most places, an empty cart is almost the same price as a full cart even at the wholesale level so there's no point doing that. I seem to remember ages ago, someone warning about fish tank filler in a thread though. I'll try to hunt it down and see if it wasn't just a dream.

NoJoy, but here's the one about the animal toy stuffing

Wonder if Katink continued using the stuffing? But you're right dc...it does get expensive using carts; even with reusing them, they don't last forever and if you're a heavy smoker (like me), it's even worse. I am still going to go ahead with the fluval for now....will see what comes out about the bagged fiber (if anything).

BTW....sea sponge? What's up with that?

I too was concerned with this fiber filling in the carts, knowing that some lung problems from analogs stems from inhaling fibers from the filters. (Even though we're not inhaling it directly with e-cigs)

So I did my own experimenting today.

I own a company that make 100% biodegradable packing materials and I know from past experiments that this product is very absorbent to oil, and with the e-liquids consisting mostly of oil I had to try. It works GREAT!!! (Re-fillable and/ or cheap enough to have a fresh one every time, also eliminating the old nicotine problem.) It also seems to hold and use all the e-liquid better with much less waste.

Like the fiber, they have to be cut to size, but if you're interested in a sample, let me know. I'd be happy to send some to a dozen or so of you in return for opinions to see how it works in other devices. I use classic penstyle from Puresmoker.

Before you have to restuff I have found that recycling them goes a quite a long way. This has worked so well for me i will post a little guide on how I do it.
This process works so well for me I just had to share. I can recycle my cartridges and they work like new I've done it 3 times already with all my cartridges.

Step 1:
Take the cartridges you got pre-filled or ones you filled yourself.

Step 2:
Using normal tweezers gently pull the white filling from your cartridge. Notice they are brown from the residue e-liquid

Step 3:
Drop them in a sink or bowl filled with just tap water at room temperature.
It should take only 1-2 minutes for the brown fillings to turn white by themselves.

Step 4:
Gently take the fillings from the sink and place in paper towel. you can let them dry on their own(Not in direct hot sunlight). You can speed up this process by VERY gently pressing the fillings against the paper towel then let them dry thoroughly.

Step 5:
Use a Q-tip to clean the shell of the cartridge. Careful not to push too hard or you can move the plastic plate at the end of the mouthpiece.

Step 6:
Using the tweezers now with the dry clean filling insert it back in the shell.

Step 7:
Done! you have an almost brand new cartridge ready to be filled with any flavor.

IMPORTANT!:
If after you refill and start vaping you feel the e-liquid is seeping through the back plastic plate in your mouth STOP USING IT. Myself and a friend learned the hard way that if you taste the liquid and keep tasting it you can get a horrible queasy nauseated feeling. It goes away after an hour or two but it terrible while it lasts.

Have been using the Liam method since I started vaping, works great with the 901 carts. I wish the material would fluff a little better. I fear my pen carts don't come around quite as well... this is where I'll be looking at Pello Thermolam... But for 901 carts you can't beat the above, you already have everything you need!

liam,

Thank you very much for your directions on cleaning the carts!!! I didn't know what the brown stuff was. I thought it meant still more juice. Duh ....

What if I squeeze out any leftover juice, with a syringe, like what settles in the very end? I shouldn't squeeze any with brown? If I do squeeze, do they take on their shape when washing?

If there's somewhere to get this info., what thread would it be under? KATE! You know everything.:thumb:

Also, I have been refilling used cartridges without cleaning them or squeezing them first. I don't overfill them and blow gently from mouthpiece to make sure. But I found I still get a queezy stomach. I got Steve's high because I was going through the mediums fast. But now I think it was just the amount that was in the carts. A thread there?

Thank you! again, that was great.:thumb:

Have you had any problems with it biodegrading in the cartridge itself or shrinkage like corn starch type packing material?

Hi Bug. I think the brown stuff might be nicotine liquid that has been exposed to air, light or heat which makes it change colour but that's just a guess.

Yes I have, thanks. I will watch it again too.

The brown is after vaping, having a somewhat strong pull, then I take the cart off and see the brown. Heat from the vaporizer sounds about right.

I think it's a given to squeeze the old into a separate container.

I was wondering about after squeezing, if the filler pops back to original look or quality breaks down.

My atomizer get pretty warm, almost hot, but on and off. Can you direct me where on that?

Not ready to experiment on different fillers yet. I have a tone of used carts anyways.

Thank you.:) You always come to my rescue and I really appreciate your good advise and knowledge.:thumb:

Hi Bug! I've used a similar method to Liam's but being broke I don't waste any of that precious fluid - I squeeze 'em out as far as possible and vape the squeezings. I'd noticed elsewhere Kate saying she does the same which was why I felt happy doing that, her advice is so good. The mix of flavours is quite interesting but not unpleasant. The resulting liquids have SOME colour to them but it isn't that dark.

The wool itself I put into an infuser ball (like you use for tea) and boiled it. Doesn't seem to hurt it at all and it comes out snowy white. The wool comes unfolded into little squares so you just fold it back up again when it's dry before replacing into the cart with tweezers just like Liam does. No noticeable change to the consistency of the wool so far but I don't suppose it will last indefinitely.

Tried boiling the rest of the cart as well first time but they didn't seem to like that - mouthpieces went rather grey and the inner parts (mine come in two pieces) actually started to melt. Gave it a bit more thought and came up with the following: mouthpieces and inner carts get washed in fairly hot water with some anti-bacterial cleaner in the water then rinsed thoroughly before leaving out on kitchen paper to air-dry before reassembling. Top of a radiator speeds up the drying nicely.

I'm a bit hygiene-conscious (definitely NOT a freak tho'!) because these have after all been in your mouth, and I've been letting others try out my kit - always using a clean (or cleaned) cart then cleaning those ones out before using them again myself. This time of year there are always colds and 'flu around in the UK and I've no desire to give them to other folk or catch them myself if it is easily avoided. ;)

As for refilling or topping up the carts I'm only using myself, I carry on doing that quite a few times (maybe 15/20) until I reckon they look as if they could do with a cleanout. I collect those together in a ziplock bag until I've got a dozen or so then squeeze and clean 'em all at one go - doing them one at a time would be way too much hassle! :D

Hi Tetsab, I don't know why I didn't get this till today. Any who, I don't boil anything. I clean the fillers in warm water. I was cleaning the carts the same way and letting all air dry, keeping a couple already clean to vape with while the ones I cleaned air dry. What you say about them being used makes sense they should be cleaned. I thought of maybe a 1 part clorox to 10parts water soak for a few minutes, rinse well, should do it. I'll try that and see. It shouldn't do any harm to them.

My problem in getting the filler into the very bottom of the cart as they started with. When I go to pull the tweezers out, some of the filler comes back up and I know it wasn't all the way down if I get some of the liquid when I inhale. I feel the end go in and try to carefully remove the tweezers. It used to work at first. I am using regular tweezers and I guess the are a little wider than the ones you buy as an accessory item. I guess they're thinner.

I'd like to find a filler material that is the same or equal to the original. I know others have experimented with different materials but I don't know which works the best. Maybe Kate knows. She does know a lot and stays on top of all these things.

Kate or someone who knows, are you around? Do you know or have suggestions? I think mine are wearing out.

Thanks Tetsab for your info.:)

Bug.

PS: I thought of the baggie to keep them from evaporating. My concern there was if the juice would leak out being that they are laying on their sides.
