Okay, dumb question here... the 18650 batteries are too short to make contact without some type of something to add height. Do you like how technical I can be? So the question is, what can I/should I use to get an 18650 battery to work?

Never mind. Just read the instruction sheet that came with the cutlass. Now I understand what all those magnets are for...

Nope.. same with mine, need the spacers.. I dont mind tho..

That im not sure of, actually i dont think there are any... If you get some protected 18350's you prolly wont need any spacers tho...

Yeah, the AW's are small. Seems only natural since they're smaller than plain ole protected batts. I use two of the rare earth magnets.. One on the positive end of each batt. Pretty safe in my experience.
