Avast ye, honorable plank-owners, owners, and lubbers in general! Here is a small video of the parts for the kit now offered. As always feedback is appreciated even if not acted upon, arrrr...

:D

P.S., the noise in the background is the dust collector .. forgot to turn it off

Nice video Brian not sure if i trust myself on building one but im sure those will go pretty fast at $50 a kit. I assume your website is updated as the mods are sold?

I have several of all the wood types offered already cut. When an order is placed all I have to do is grab the wood type requested, box it all up and ship it. There should never be a delay of more than a day or two if its the weekend. Yarrr...

The website has a order form with drop down menu that you select wood types from, not actual individual kits posted anymore like on the first page of mods for sale.

Arrrr...

I could not find a button small enough for the Mark-II or III in all chrome except this one. I got 'em dirt cheap from asia, but took 6 weeks to get here.

But after only a month of use the chrome is wearing off showing the brass underneath and it's not firing when pressed sometimes. I'm using the best switch vs style vs size I have been able to find as of yet.
Have you looked into these?

Very high quality (you can actually feel it). They are a touch deeper than the horns though.

Digi-Key - EG4722-ND (Manufacturer - PV5S64011)

In Nickel.

Digi-Key - EG4728-ND (Manufacturer - PV5S640NN)

I don't think I've looked at them before. When I search for switches I specify 3 amp minimum so they never popped up. These are rated at 2 amp@ 48v - I've heard it repeated from various sources that our switches should be able to handle 3 amps of current for a 3.7v box if you want long life expectancy.

Do you have different thoughts on this?

Thanks a bunch for the input, keep it coming :)

Brian,

Just a quick shout to say thanks for all you're doing. Your thoughtfulness, craftsmanship, and generosity are terrific. I've been following your work since the thread began, but one thing or another has kept me from getting one of your beauties yet. I've almost pulled the trigger numerous times, but I keep going back and forth about which model and what woods. (Most recently, madvapes new dirt-cheap VV box thinned out my wallet a bit...)

The new Scallywag kits are wonderful. And now custom woods, too! I'm a goner for sure.

I also wanted to add my total agreement to your comment about human beings messing up the planet. I fear we're in the minority on that opinion, although humanity's collective denial will almost certainly get some serious jolts in the decade ahead.

Anyway, more power to you, cap'n. Keep up the great work. Arrrrrgh.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate your kind words.

I hope the DIY Kits sell, if enough ECF members give one a try I might open a subforum thread for a Red Sky DIY picture showcase. Members can post pics of what they have created. That would be fun.

I lowered the price a bit for the DIY Kits for ECF members. ECF members NEVER pay shipping / insurance and your invoices will not include that fee. One way I can give a continuous discount to our people here.

Thanks for your interest, hope I can offer something in the future that will grab you.

Later

I guess I'll take that cedar order in a Mark IV Cap'n- much more wood to admire that way. Let me know if you think that color combination will work out. If you think another type wood for the cap and bottom is better or maybe an all cedar one, go for it. I'll let you play with it and see what you can come up with. Take your time, can't rush perfection!

The Cedar and Cocobolo would look nice I think. May I suggest using cocobolo for the inlay as well? The yellow might not look too hot against the deep red of the cedar.

Also, for the inlay, do you want a single 'V' stripe centered on the squonk hole side?

let me know, it's ready to have end caps installed. I have a batch of 12 Mark-IV survivors almost done with the shaping/cutting process, two are cedar and one is black cherry for AG.

Also got one I'm working on for Az, all the rest are my call for the design.

It's always about the details, not some oft repeated generalizations. A long lasting switch needs to be well built using high quality components, tight tolerances and good quality control. The contacts should be plated with 'noble metals', silver, gold, platinum etc to resist the corrosion and oxidation layer that will occur due to the arcing. That's why the home-built mechanical switches need constant maintenance to work right and keep additional added resistance to a minimum.

Do a little research on DC vs. AC switching. DC is harder on contacts than AC. You'll rarely see cheap switches actually rated for DC, some retailers might play fast and loose and say their switches can handle such and such DC current, but if unbranded who knows?

Note these are rated for 2A@ 48V DC. In other words they are built specifically for the rigors of DC at a voltage that's over 10 times what we need.

No need to take my word for it, they have been in the field for many years, used at 3.7 and 6V in some of the most respected, reliable and recommended mods.

Different style same switch manufacturer and 2A rating in the SB.

They are too deep to use in plastic box mods. They have the same indent as the horns but with a lower profile button and like I say when you press them they just feel like a quality item, but then again they are.

If just for bragging rights your PV deserves more than a $1 switch that's found on $15 box mods. :p

Thats exciting, I'm always willing to entertain better ideas. I will look into getting some of them and from the data sheet they should slide right into the current design. The price is twice what the current switch is but that is a minor concern. I do like the square flush switch though, the squared design matches the outline of the box well. Perhaps I could offer two styles in switches for people who like chrome, and some do. Arrr...

Thanks a bunch for bringing this up :)
