If you can't find the kanthal, try out Nichrome. I've been using it in place of kanthal for the last couple of months, and I much prefer it. I'm getting about three weeks out of a single coil before I toss it (haven't had one actually pop yet), and it's much easier to maneuver and wrap with, as it's much more malleable.
Try out the 32awg nichrome, at $6 for 50ft on eBay, you're not really throwing away too much money if you don't like it...

I have used Nichrome heating wire also, it does work very well, more made for the silica or ceramic wicks, but it DOES work on SS mesh wicks as well.
Kanthal in the 20awg family are more than likely going to thick and a lot harder to manuveur. You could take a stab at the 36awg but warned you may be popping coils if you cannot get a high enough ohm pull from the setup.

I want a defcon I am just afraid it will be too large on a provari with the extended battery. That atom looks sweet tho. Can't wait to see how that works out. Btw is the defcon mini in production right now too? That might be the way to go til I can snag an atom.
Ive ordered some equipment to help me get these made faster.Right now I mostly use my handy dandy Dremel.I love that little guy and I use a drill press.I have a metal cutter coming in that will cut my metal shell nice and clean so no more sanding on those I hope.Just in case I bought a 2 part table top sander.I may start putting out the mini end of next week.If my supplies get here which I have tracking info for now.I have to take one complete day off with no building.I have to turn our spare bedroom into a work shop/office lol.My wife wants her kitchen back and I don't blame her.Thanks Scott for answering the kanthal wire question.

Really looking forward to the release of the Atom! That looks like it will be the perfect size for me as I don't really go through a lot of juice in a day. I think an Atom would last me about two days, and that would be great. Can't wait to try a rrebuildable.
Wow, just catching up on the old thread and now this one.. Atom looks amazing, mini as well.. Got the USPS shipping notice on my standard Defcon, looking forward to trying it out on Thursday! Keep at it Chopper.. but don't go crazy.. take some deep breaths!

Hi everyone S&S mods is now open for business.I'm starting this very small and hope to have it grow with more mods and things.Right now I'm just selling my version of a rebuild able atty named the DEFCON.I'm sure some have seen the similar ones floating around.Mine are all hand made at my home by myself.These are made to order,so when you order one and pay I will then make it and ship when its complete.These are very nice units and work very well.They are made of stainless steel and I use .999 pure sterling silver for the electrodes along with mesh #400 and kanthal 32 awg resistance heating wire.The DEFCON can hold approximately 3.5ml of liquid and has been tested for leaks with no evidence of any.Right now I have two different types,black and stainless and I can also add a blue led light if wanted.I will have more color choices at a later date and other color of led lights as well.It will come to you fully ready to just add juice and vape.
