Well, I'm finally getting the hang of making coils and they're now lasting me about 3-4 days.....

but then they start to taste like soap! i read somewhere that you can actually taste the pg if it's a much higher ratio to the vg.

I don't boil the silica before I use it, so if I do that, will it eliminate that nasty taste?

I've used cotton yarn, which I boiled and embroidery thread, which I also boiled and i don't recall that 3-day old taste, but I've stopped using those two cuz they dry up to quickly

Which reminds me, I got a boatload of cotton candle wick and I really don't care for it, so if anyone wants some, pm me.

The steel wick is so much better!! Got my first one set up on the hornet; been vaping all day.

No torch or complicated oxidization process, I just folded the edge on both sides in and rolled it tight. Did a few juice burns with a lighter and cut a 45 degree angle on the bottom end to touch the juice reservoir / floor. Took a little fiddling, but got a 30 awg 6-wrap running now at 1.34 ohms.

Well, that mesh wicks like a maniac. Boy is this thing thirsty and it spits a little when it's first squonked but the flavor is way cleaner than silica. Dry burns are convenient whenever I want to change flavors. SS Dry hits are torture but they are avoidable.

Very happy! I will not be messing around with that silica nonsense any longer.

Is this a vertical coil? Any way you could post a picture? I'm not sure I understand how this is setup.

I'll try to post a pic soon Geoscouter but for now it looks a lot like kabonk's set-up from page 2 of this thread. On mine, the bottom is cut at an angle to line up with the base to facilitate wicking. Also, see how it's angled so the bottom of the wick is on the small side of the atomizer (left side on the picture)? Mine is the other way so that the angle cut portion is against the larger open area on the base of the atomizer (right side of the picture). I'm still vaping on the same coil!

I finally got a chance to play with this ceramic wick a bit. I made a vertical wick for my Chalice - started out at 1/8" diameter, but that was a little big, so I shaved it down to about 7/64. Seems to be working pretty well so far. I have to squonk more often, but my squonking thumb is up to the task. The taste is clean, but maybe a little bit muted.

I couldn't resist playing with the set up. Here is what I found works for me.

Sweet juices 90%Vg 10%Pg
Mini 2.0 and Reomizer (drip well filled in with silicon sealant) No leaks ever!
2.5 mm silica wick with low end wrapped back under coil and over feed hole
30 gauge Kanthol A-1 wire
9 1/2 coils on same side of post near vent hole
1.9 ohms
Mini 2.0 and case.jpgstep1.jpgstep2.jpgstep3.jpgstep4.jpg
I used the hex-key from reosmods.com to make my coils on. The wick expands to fill in the void left by removing the small tool. It is also easier to wrap the wire in reverse to how the strands in the wick are wrapped. I really like the wide spacing between post on the Reomizer. And, this thing is impossible to flood with normal squonking.

Had to re-wick some of my RBA's today and thought I would share whats been working great for me.

I'm using 30g Kanthal. I build my coils by wrapping the wire around a wooden toothpick, then install them with the toothpick still in place. Make sure the coils are nice and snug where I want them, then remove the toothpick. I like my coils very tightly spaced so I then pulse-fire them a few times to heat the wire, then pinch the coils together with some tweezers or needle-nose pliers.

I'm getting fantastic flavor and vapor with these, and the coils last weeks and weeks. I've got one going on five weeks now and its still going strong.

For wicking I use rolled cotton (similar to a cotton ball, available at CVS, Wallgreens), formed into a rope and pulled through the coil. Depending on the juice I can get from about three days to over a week of use from a single wick, then when it starts to get funky I just pull out the wick, dry burn the coil, and insert a new one. I can do a wick swap now in under five minutes.

I usually make a 7/8 coil at about 2.2Ω for the VVG's and a 5/6 coil at about 1.7Ω for the Grand.

This is a pretty interesting thread about ceramic wicks. Much of it has to do with experimenting on genesis-style atty's, but some drippers are trying it now with good success. I just got my hands on some of the air stone from PetSmart (it is first discussed at post #208 of the thread) today, so I'm going to try to make a little wick for my Chalice and see how it goes:

Well I would have to say this is the new big thing??http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m8SAZaA-SM:facepalm:

How do you get your coils so close together like that? I've been trying for what feels like forever to get a nice Cisco coil...

Take a lighter to the wire before you start, then wrap the wire around a toothpick making sure to keep everything very tight and the coils close together. You can then remove the toothpick, hit it again with a lighter then squeeze the coils together with some pliers, or you can install the coil in your device, give it a couple of pulses to heat up, then squeeze it so the coils are tight.

I think it helps to heat the coil a couple of times, then do the squeezing. After a few times repeating this process most of the springiness is gone and the coil will hold its shape. It also helps to use thicker wire. I've had the best results with 28g Kanthal, but I use 30g to achieve the resistance I'm looking for.

Hildicat:

On the Chalice, doesn't the wick restrict airflow from the air hole with the coil like that? Wouldn't a diagonal setup between the posts allow for direct air right to the coil?

Very nice looking coils by the way.

Jack

Hey Jack

The air intake on my Chalice lines up directly between the two posts. I keep the wick short on the side that faces the intake, and kinda tuck it off to one side so as not to impede air flow. I leave the wick long on the opposite side and fluff it out to help hold juice. Maybe this photo can explain it better than I can.

CHALICE-4_AIR_zps77bf04c5.jpg

I have built a 'side' coil on the Chalice, with the coil directly in front of the air hole as well as a vertical coil. They both had their pluses and minuses. The side coil was much more like the ERA style of vape. A little more TH, but the posts aren't lined up for easy installation that way and I found it a bit more difficult to maintain a tight even coil. The vertical coil is nice, and probably had the best 'feel' in terms of air flow, but it suffered in wicking capacity. I also tended to over stuff the base of the Chalice with wick which made it very prone to flooding. The extra wick would block the juice from draining back into the bottle.
