Ever since I got my Derringer, I keep seeing the SMPL/Derringer combo and really wanna finally get one. Itll be my first mech, Ive been a VV/VW guy since I started vaping last July.. Obviously the Derringer works on it (mines a Tobeco clone), anyone tried one with a Samurai Bonsai? I have a clone on the way from AngelCigs so just wondering..

Seems like the Amod is working out well for folks (just read all 19 pages of the thread hah), found one on the bay for $20 with free shipping so Im probably gonna jump on a black one.. Anything else I need to be on the lookout for?? I run my Derringer and my Tobeco kayfun 4s at 13-15w on my sigelei Minis, so I headed over to Steam Engine and ran some numbers.. Looks like I can wrap a 1ohm coil and put out about 14w?? Like I said its my first mech so as much as Ive learned about all this over the past year I just wanna make sure Im doing everything right..

1ohm on a mech with a fully charged battery will be producing about 17 Watts, thats a good starting point. Remember that the 4.2 volts of a fully charged battery will tail off during use, so the wattage will drop over time.
Are you up to speed on battery safety, and the inherent dangers of hybrid 510s?

I have an Derringer on a copper SMPL, and I just stumbled on a great setup.
26G 6 wraps@2mm at 0.65 ohms. Produces as much vapor as my Plume Veil with a dual 24G at 0.32 ohms, except much cooler. Because the chamber is so small, hot builds can be real lip burners.

Yeah for the most part.. I know about the risks of over amping it and Ive read up a bunch on how the SMPL basically connects your atty straight to the battery so I hope the non adjustable 510 on my Derringer sticks out enough not to short hehe. Ahh yeah 17 watts, whenever I run the Steam Engine thing I always use 3.7v for it since I know that 4.2 doesnt last long.. Id rather have the 'average' as opposed to basing it off that initially voltage of a fresh battery. Ive used the Derringer at 18w before and it was nice but depending on the juice I have at the time Im at either 13, 15, or 18w (these are the memories Ive set in the Sigelei).. Sounds like I should be ok. I dont plan on going much lower than 1 ohm cause anything above 18 just hurts the crap out of my throat even with 6mg nic. Its just too hot and harsh and I gotta keep my lovely 'singing voice' intact hehe (rather my screaming voice, my band doesnt do pretty music).. When I bought the drip tip for my Derringer I went with the longer 15mm Delrin one at Avid Vapers that was pretty much made for the Derringer. No heat has hit me yet, just a little juice in the mouth the couple times Ive overfilled it haha. I dont NEED the SMPL as I have 2 very safe and sound Sigelei Minis, but I love how compact it is and it looks like it was pretty much made to go with the Derringer they just look so awesome together so Id love to try it out. I still to this day have never used a dual coil build in anything. Ive got 29ga here, usually use 8 wraps@2mm which gets me around 1.5ohms (I use this on both the Derringer and my Kayfun 4s) so I had to go look up what Im going to have to do differently to make the battery put out the wattage I get from the Sig and that was 5 wraps at 2mm.. Ive worked on guitar amps for awhile so Ive got ohms law and voltage stuff down pat its just these mech mods are so much closer to your face than just dealing with a circuit inside a head cabinet Ive never bought one this whole time cause I wanted to make sure everything was safe and sound before I jumped into it. Im probably just too paranoid and overthinking it but hey better safe than sorry right?? Id hate to end up another one of those idiot news stories that ruins it for the rest of the community here! I just hope this ebay vendor has legit AMODs, but then again I find it hard to believe that people clone clones but Ive seen em before, cant put it past anybody in this industry seeing as how people are cloning the already cheap as hell Freakshow and all that..

the derringer is overrated, I do like it and have one, but the rogue is much better, same size and looks much better on the smpl and it is leak free

Different strokes for different folks. I don't like the rogue. Too hard to drip, not enough airflow too hard to adjust/line up airflow, ....for me.

Yeah, I didn't care for the rogue either, and yet the derringer is one of my favorite RDAs.

My Derringer only leaks when Im drunk and forget I already filled it haha.. I still have to figure out how to get my wicking right since mines only running single coil and most pictures Ive seen are all dual.. Im pretty sure Ill be happy with it and the SMPL.. Plus I have my Samurai Bonsai clone on the way (should be here tomorrow) so well break that one in too.. Pretty close to flat out retiring my Kayfun 4s now since they just dont cut it when I go back to them..

As far as AMOD SMPL clones go, I highly recommend the copper one, even if the appearance isn't your favorite. It hits SO much harder than the others, there's just no comparison, IMHO. I use a .18 - .23 ohm build in a Doge v2 on mine, which is more like the 95-118W range, and the difference between my stainless and copper SMPL clones is extreme.

I keep seeing pics and links, but holding the original, all seem to be cheap quality to be honest. Uneven drilling, narrow slot at an angle and the tube looks pretty thin. My SMPL assembled is heavy, the clones look pretty light duty stuff. Different strokes I guess
There are bad clones and clones EXACTLY like the original. What is a "narrow slot"

I actually have a Rogue also. But mine is BF modified and I'm waiting on my new REO to put it on. Then I'll truly be able to compare the two attys. But as far as my SMPL goes, I really like it.

I run single coils. I also use the Azure Wicking, so it might look or turn out differently with cotton, but this is what I do:

The shorter tail to the left is tucked under the coil. The longer tail wraps between the posts, around the well, and touches the tail tucked under the coil. Works out perfectly for me.

I will give this one a try next cleaning hehe. Right now I have both tails the same length, coil is centered in the atty. And both just go between the posts and into the back side of the well.. Never though about pushing one side under the coil and the other side to the back of it.. I think Ill unravel the whole piece of yarn too. The yarn I bought is basically 4 strands twisted together and I usually only untwist the end pieces that are down in the well to spread them out. Id take pics but Im just too shaky to get good macro pics with my phone, and my old Galaxy S2 likes to crash and reboot when I take pics lately anyways..

Just wanted to say thanks for the tip hehe. I pulled the ends up out of the well earlier, adjusted the length of the one side and fanned out the strands of cotton and put it underneath the coil then did the same with the longer side and put it down in the back of the well. Seems to be wicking ALOT more efficiently now and as a bonus, for the first time since Ive had it, I filled it up and had no dribbles coming out of the airholes! I think not having the wick under the coil was letting juice come out, cause everytime I filled it up I get some seepage out of both sides of the holes. Was sitting outside earlier after I moved the wick and after 3 fills, that thing is dry as a bone around the airholes!!! You saved me haha.. Looks like its not seeping out of the bottom anymore either which there was always a teeny tiny bit around the bottom seam.. Maybe now my poor Sigelei Mini will stop getting juice running down its sides now! Makes me feel safer throwing it on the SMPL whenever it gets here too..
