That is a basic box, Tibs. So it's fine. You can go lower, but ?why? if you don't have to. Depends...if you plan on replacing it in 2 years anyway and don't care...sure, get an i3 or smaller box/power supply.

Atty i have win 8.1 on my desktop at work and my laptop at home. I'm good to go for now.
I was responding to Fran's request for feedback. I agree that win8 is a better option, but i don't think she'll go there.
I wonder if the price difference (<$300 vs >$600) is partly related to wanting Win7. The time before this when i needed a new laptop, i also needed to stay with XP. I had to pay more for teh laptop with XP installed than i would have if i'd gone with Win7.

That's fine too...I'd get my Mom that box because she does 2 things with a computer...1) Go on-line to check her credit union, and 2) Play solitaire.

I too suspect that the old computer is fine, Atty and that the tech support people are clueless...
The main cost diff CES is in parts.
Lower cost processor.
Lower cost power supply.
Probably smaller/plastic case.
Lower cost MOBO.
Maybe slower drives.
You get the idea.
None of that means any of the parts are "bad" parts. I'll bet $50.00 or so is just the CPU diff. for example.

I am definitely not a lert today Atty. We had our office holiday dinner last night and I was out past my bedtime. 
Makes sense. though I'd suspect Lenovo is a better product than ASUS...but that's just me making it up based on no real knowledge whatsoever. I dunno the difference in processors, though i like the idea of more RAM for less money.

unless my memory fails me frannie went with bells and whistles with that hp and it can't be more than 2 years old ................ sigh
and having it looked at would be my first choice
The dinner was really nice, CES. Everyone had lots of fun. OMG, they had filet mignon tenderloins that were ridiculous! I rarely eat red meat but I chowed on that! I ate soooooooooooooooo much!
ASUS is a fairly well respected MOBO maker (?China or Taiwan or ?).
Levono is well known too (China computer maker, been in business a while) and acquired IBM's personal computer business in 2005, including the ThinkPad laptop and tablet lines.
I'm using an ASUS board now, for example.

Even if your network card is bad, and even the graphics card too, a computer shop could replace the stuff (if they thought it would be safe...like maybe power supply too) cheaper than getting a new computer. But I'm not sure you want to hear this.

Hey Tibbies! It was really more of a dinner than a party. It was nice and the food was fantastic! I think I shot up a jeans size today. 
I don't eat much meat either, Lost...but filet is yummy
As i said, Atty, I'm just making it up based on nothing. But if both are reputable, i'd certainly go for the lowest price.
