Ok, just talked to Steve.
I got my new mechanical switch for the Protege fixed.
Let me try to explain what to do.
1- get a pair of pliers.
2- take the switch out and just have the part with the silver ends to work on.
3- look at the end that does not have the half moon on it, the flat end is what you will be working on. Only turn one end not both.
4- take the pliers and grip the very end (top) of the silver piece and turn it around 90 degrees. that way inside there will now be a round side for the copper band to touch, .....before it was on the flat side.
5- put it all back together and try it.
If that didn't work try the other end and turn the bottom silver end piece.
Steve is going to try to get pics of what to do as soon as he can.
I hope I made things clear, if not ask questions.
