Don't yell at me! just kidding....
after reading the thread Leaford had started for folks to post their MF carto experiences, I see that the cartomizers come in very inconsistent ohms (or something), with a +/- of sometimes 1.5, rather than the more acceptable .2-.4
So my burn vs. no burn on whichever battery was probably more due to that than anything else. I probably had some that were too low or too high (still can't wrap my head around that)

Lowering the resistance (ohms) increases the watts/temperature output by the coil. Think of it this was: lowering the resistance is like increasing the diameter of a garden hose. More water, in this case, more power. The first batch of cartos were around 2.2 ohms with lots of variation. The second batch was pretty consistently around 2.6.

Now there were a lot more reports of burnt taste with BMF batteries on the 1st batch which ran 6.2W @ 3.7V. They raised the resistance on the 2nd batch to drop the power output to 5.3W @ 3.7V (14% decrease to cool them down) to avoid the burnt taste on most BMF batteries. However... On a fresh non-BMF battery (not just V4L which has been unfairly singled out), the 2nd batch initially runs 6.8W @ 4.2V which is about 10% more than the problematic 1st batch on a BMF battery.

Now for comparison, after I took the damn white ring out of a 2nd batch 2.5 ohm carto, it's running 10W on a 5V passthru. That's 62% more power than the 1st batch on a BMF battery, and 89% more power than the 2nd batch on a BMF battery. See why I'm absolutely convinced it's the ring?

Thanks cryx. And in my case, I wasn't singling out the v4l unfairly -- it is just the only other battery I have so I was comparing the two.

No worries, the statement wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. I've just heard V4L called out many times like their battery is an oddball. Standard kr808d-1 batteries, actually lipos in general, are unregulated 3.7V. Fresh off the charger they will be 4.2V and will output 4.2V. Recently, to Leaford's surprise, he discovered the BMF batteries are voltage regulated which means they will charge to 4.2V but never output more than 3.7V. Pretty nifty.

They're regulated to 3.6V, not 3.7.
