In this case, the metal tubing was not cleaned of it's factory protective coating before it was powder coated and the wind blew the nice shiny powder coat flakes off in 2 to 6 inch pieces...

Bikenstein,

That is really strange - actually I often took my stuff over to the Coat shop but never watched their procedure. The stuff I was having coated was for the Corning Glass that made the LED Gorilla glass and if anything had flaked off like that I would have been in deep Poo-Poo. Any particles getting on the hot glass would have spelled my demise.

It's not strange if you fail to prep the metal. I had several problems training people to powder coat properly. Temperature and oven time makes a big difference also. There are also problematic areas like corners and edges sometimes that refuse to accept the powder because of the electrostatic charge, especially with earlier equipment. Preheating makes for a much better coat. If manufacturers don't use proper procedures, their powder coating can easily fail. It can result in a soft coat that will rub off, flake, blister etc.. I've seen all kinds of results.

Awesome. Not sure they're going to get anywhere with Kanthal :) But Stainless should be very possible with Yihi's supposed 0.001Ω accuracy (at least it displays to 0.001Ω so hopefully it's accurate to that level)

Kanthal is a trademark for a family of wires, so it might be a Kanthal other than Kanthal A1.

Looks like a pretty straight forward assembly with a screw mount board and 3 solder points, once mine is thrashed down the road I might have it powder coated, I use PC on a product I've been selling for 15+ years and it's tough as nails and an inexpensive process.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

I used to do a lot of powder coating, and still do from time to time. Proper prep, proper application, and proper bake and cure are essential. It is better than standard paint in many areas. It's not the end all coating, but it's very nice and extremely durable. I always thought the coating on my SX felt like powder coating.

My first thought when I got it was a ceramic finish, wishful thinking.

If you want to get really techie...

Make a blank bookmark and use this as the url:

Code:
javascript:(function(){var h,q;h=location.hostname;q=(window.getSelection ? window.getSelection() : document.getSelection ? document.getSelection() : document.selection.createRange().text);q=prompt('Search \''+h+'\' using Google:',q);if(q!=null){if(h){q='site:'+h+' '+q;}location='http://www.google.com/search?q='+encodeURIComponent(q);}})();

It gives you a pop up window and will use google to search the current site you're on for what you're looking for.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, gotta say though...chrome would be a serious fingerprint magnet and chrome rusts as well, the joke could be on me though...not sure you're serious about chrome.

Here's a black chromed C frame

Think its the way to go, but as you say will like prints although a microfiber cloth will keep it looking good for photo shoots :cool:

TruSound,

I am pretty sure Chrome doesn't rust. Fingerprints probably but a microfiber cloth will take care of that. :2c:
