The only way I can see that a penny could improve performance in this situation would be if the mech switch was crap and/or passing current through a spring.
In that case, using the switch plunger to move a penny into a position that causes it to bridge the gap between the battery neg and the tube wall.
Basically, turning the penny into a more effective switch than the switch itself...
Just a though... I'd have to see it myself to know for sure...
