This is an excerpt from US News.com from today: Totally green smoking is too good to be true. Turns out, the electronic smokes - which are marketed on several websites as healthier than real cigarettes - can be as harmful as traditional kind. According to an FDA press release

and from Qatar an article stating Saudi Arabia is banning e-cigs...

E-cigarettes”, which sell for around SR500, are manufactured in China to be marketed globally, mainly in Europe.

Upon testing it was found that the “e-cigarette” harms human health far more than the normal cigarette and it contains 40 times as much nicotine as a regular cigarette.

Where is this "information" coming from?!

ROLF. That is even better than the Hong Kong e-cig raid!

It troubles me to keep seeing this statement that the FDA doesn't ban cigarettes, so it shouldn't ban PVs. The FDA does not have the authority to ban cigarettes. Maybe it would if it could; who knows? But repeating this point weakens the whole argument. We have to demonstrate a better level of understanding of this process than the average 'Murican possesses, if we want to argue effectively.

As for China... I don't have a big problem with product quality. My reasoning: China sentenced a few people to DEATH when melamine was added to milk powder there and some babies died as a result, and the head of the company that manufactured lead-flavored toys committed suicide after China banned his company from exporting. I kinda doubt many manufacturers of anything in the US have that much (a) to fear from the government or (b) shame. There's huge incentive for those folks to keep their noses, and their businesses, clean -- especially in the current climate.

That is a good point. Didn't China also execute a head of their FDA year or so ago?

There's a serious problem here. News channels in the States, Europe, UK etc can say what they like about PV's/E-cigs as they're all made in China. If these were products created in the Western World, these 'News' bulletins would have to check up on their facts or face enourmous law suits.

Should say too, although the FDA is only (for now) making waves on this subject, Britain will no doubt act upon it. The current HM Gov have pretty much given themselves Carte Blanche when it comes to defining 'Right and Wrong'. If they're in the wrong and they know it (ie they're going to tell 'untruths' about scientific studies or public opinion, they will replace 'Such and such is KNOWN TO BE' with 'WE BELIEVE such and such is known to be'.

Our politicians would be roundly applauded for saying they believed in fairies, but would be shot down in a second if they claimed to have actually seen one. Needless to say, our lot 'believe' in anything that suits their purpose and see nothing (science, evidence, common sense) that challenges it. It's led to the enactment of some of the worst laws in British History. I have very little faith in them seeing the 'light' on this occasion.

Thankfully, our politicos are off for their ten week annual holiday, I'm hoping this won't hit the fan on their return.

Although I can appreciate the sentiments about the FDA "caring about public safety", I have to say I don't buy it. The FDA is an arm of our federal government - do any of you know just how much tax revenue the federal government takes in on the sale of tobacco products? Do you know how much tax revenue they would lose if e-cigarettes were not challenged?

I don't believe they care - and I CERTAINLY don't think they want people to stop smoking cigarettes either.

Why are threads with headlines like this allowed to continue?

Yes, we need to discuss what to do about the current FDA climate towards e-cigs. Yes, we need to band together to promote what we feel is a safer alternative to smoking. Yes, we need to pressure the manufacturers to do their due diligence and test their products properly.

No, we do not need fear-mongering scare tactic headlines on threads that will drive away new users and make them think that the battle is over before they've had a chance to do anything about it.

Yeah - I do agree - I edited the thread title to 'won' to try to make it look a little less categorical. Perhaps I should just re-title it.

Because in an argument, it's always better to be able to demonstrate that your logic is consistently trustworthy, and your opponent's is not. Gives your side more credibility, which in a perfect world would be important.

But then I have a history of being surprised and infuriated when hyperbole and hysteria win out over logical argument. Sigh, I'm in my 50s, you'd think I'd have learned to at least ditch the surprise...
Ditto. I'm in my 30's. Please don't tell me I have at least 20 more years of the same.

Truth be told, logical conversations only fare well on internet message boards and university classrooms. They fail heavily in the real world.

You'd think logic would prevail in the court room, but money and legalese dominate instead. You'd think logic would prevail in the media, but mass hysteria and emotional roller coaster rides dominate.

The FDA calls a press conference and it results in headlines such as "Ecigarettes found to be toxic & poisonous -- as bad, if not worse, than tobacco cigarettes." Now imagine combatting that headline with the cool and level-headed "Ecigarette proponents are more logically consistent."

It might get read. :(

Problem is that logic doesn't work in a culture war. That's what we're facing here. It's more like religion than it is like debate team. The anti-smoking lobby won't respond to logic. Taking the high ground against them is not necessarily the best strategy.
