A flat piece would smush into the bottle opening too, no?

It would/does.

But the Smush Alignment Factor (SAF) is directly proportional to how Perpendicular the Flat Disk mates with the Bottle. There is also the Fall-Out Syndrome I mentioned earlier.

Trust Me... Poly-Caps are the Way to Go.

I would trust you more if you could provide the Smush Alignment Factor Coefficient (SAFC).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not in the same the way a cone would. It not only seals around the top of the rim, but also the inside of the rim. It's like a cork with a threaded cap to keep it wedged in.

You could contact a poly cap manufacturer for that information if you want true figures, which you seem to be after. Anyone here can say anything but if you want the skinny, go to the source. Armchair engineers and scientists aren't a great source for scientific info. :D No offense to anyone here.

Perhaps like using a pillow to suffocate someone versus a hunk of plywood?

On the North American Unified Bottle Scale (NAUBS) anything less than 0.55 would be considered Poor.

And Anything Greater than 0.80, usually Only seen on Cobalt Blue Bottles, would be considered Very Good.

NOTE: SAFC's are like mAh's. In that the can be Vastly Overrated. So be careful when buying from Questionable Sources.

That Doesn't Happen with Poly-Cone Caps.

Well - I don't know what happened - nor what I did . . . However, when I decanted the NIC I had into 8 oz bottles this past week - I had to reopen a bottle and the Poly-Cone was actually still attached to the bottle instead of the cap itself . . .

The black cap is phenolic plastic.
    The polycone liner is PE.
    PE Cone Lined Caps
PolyCone Lined Phenolic Caps - Qorpak
PolyCone Lined Phenolic Caps | Chemical Packaging Supplies - Burch Bottle & Packaging, Inc.
"Black Phenolic Polyseal™ Cone Lined Caps form an exceptionally tight seal and offer a good chemical barrier. This liner molds itself around the sealing areas of the finish as the cap is screwed on, virtually eliminating leakage, evaporation, contamination, binding, and backing off."
