The State of Confusion
Thanks for the list Bill. I will copy and paste it into a word document for safe keeping. I have maybe six or so of those so far. Yesterday I tried mandarin orange at 10% with 2% Bavarian cream and the orange flavor is still lacking. I've been trying to come up with an orange flavor that tastes more like the fruit or maybe even like orange punch like sunny d. I have tangerine, orange cream, and mandarin orange. None by themselves work for me. I am thinking of combining the three with some sweetener to see how that comes out. I know this is a total newbie question but what is the 100DT?

The TFA Sweet Orange is what you need to make any Orange really pop!

Now then it is VERY strong and basically Orange oil. :thumb:

When I get home tonight I'm going to try a 100DT with the three orange flavors, Bavarian cream, and EM. I really want an up front orange flavor.

It really comes down to what do you like and what are you looking for?
But until you know what a flavor tastes like and how much to use, it's hard to know where to start - thus the 100DT
Orange 1) that flavor is weak and tastes more like lemons
Orange 2) that flavor is really strong and tastes like tangerines
Orange 3) the flavor is sweet and tastes like orange juice
Now you have an idea of where to at least start to achieve the flavor you are looking for.

Thank you. One more to add to the flavor list then.

Thank you for the information on the flavors. Out of the three that I have, I so far like the mandarin orange the best but the flavor still seems weak at 10%. Maybe I should up it to 15%?

Just an example of testing flavors/taking notes etc.
Not info on any flavors in particular. I have no orange. :)

Anybody ever try TFA's Root Beer Float flavor? I have had this flavor for months and just mixed it for the first time. 10% in a 25PG/75VG base. I figure I would try a "shake n vape" before steeping and WHOA, it already has tons of flavor. :) -It tastes exactly like those candy root beer barrel candies to me. Pretty awesome! Has anybody ever tried this flavor or combined it with other TFA sweets? :p

Single flavor mixes from tfa do not work because they are meant as food additives.
If you tried to taste the exact flavor that is used to make a watermelon jolly rancher it would be putrid, bitter, and probably eat a hole in your tongue. That flavoring is mixed with pure sugars/corn syrup to give it the sweet pleasant taste we know.

Obviously we can't use rediculous amounts of sugar to make these flavors delicious. This is why you have to use bases (creams, vanillas, sweeteners) to fill the void of what sugar would do. These flavors are designed to be additives to pre-existing flavors like flavor shots in coffee, or added to sugar for candy.

Bill or anyone else ... I don't know if you seen my last post about buying 4 oz of cotton candy circus by mistake instead of cotton candy sweetner ... What do you think the differance is between "sweetner" and the "cotton candy sweetner" ? I really don't want to order 1 bottle from TFA because I just got an order in last week ..lol ... Bill , on your Cin Dan ... What do you think would be a good starting point to use sweetner instead of cotton candy that you use , or do you think it would be ok ? I guess what I am asking is if cotton candy is a sweetner and then you have sweetner , what's the differance ? Thanks for yalls help :)

I did a 100DT with another try at an orange flavor. This one came out much better. Not perfect but a much nicer orange flavor than I've gotten in the past.

    15% mandarin orange
    5% tangerine
    5% orange cream
    2% bavarian cream
    2% EM

Decrease flavoring to about 15% on the orange and increase the cream and EM and add vanilla. Take a look at this post (from my blogs):

Just an observation, but I have had really good success with vanillas and creams and sweetener in my juices. Often times when I hear about members having problems with their mixes, they don't use these supporting flavorings that enhance, brighten, thicken, and enrich their primary flavors. I thought I would go back to my post about how new juice makers can make great juice today and look at some of my rules of thumb. I thought it might be helpful to list primary flavoring(s), creams and vanillas, and sweeteners as a percentage of total mix. So, here's what that looks like:

    Custards

    Vanillas and Creams - 12%
    Sweeteners - 7%
    Primaries - 7-13%

    Danish

    Vanillas and Creams - 6-8%
    Sweeteners - 4-8%
    Primaries - 7-13%
    Secondaries - 3-7%

    Creams

    Vanillas and Creams - 10%
    Sweeteners - 5%
    Primaries - 7-13%

    Pies

    Vanillas and Creams - 5-8%
    Sweeteners - 4-6%
    Primaries - 7-13%
    Secondaries - 4-8%

    Tarts

    Vanillas and Creams - 8%
    Sweeteners - 2-4%
    Primaries - 7-15%

Ok, so overall, my favorite juice mixes have a range of uses of these common ingredients, as follows:

    Overall Ranges

    Vanillas and Creams - 5-12%
    Sweeteners - 2-8%
    Primaries - 7-15%
    Secondaries - 3-8%

Every juice must be custom tweaked to match your taste sensibilities, but there are some rules of thumb that do work for me. My average juice will have vanillas and creams of about 8%, sweeteners of about 4%, Primary flavorings of about 10%, and secondary flavorings of about 5%, or an average overall flavoring of 27%:

    Average Flavorings

    Vanillas and Creams - 8%
    Sweeteners - 4%
    Primary Flavorings - 10%
    Secondary Flavorings - 5%

Total Overall flavoring in the mix = 27%. :thumb:

So, these are my rules of thumb, in hindsight, after making about two hundred different juices and over 50 ADV's. This is my happy place. Do you know yours? :rickroll:

Taste IS subjective. What works for me, may not work for you, so you have to develop your own flavorings that suit you. If you do this, you will develop profiles, probably similar to what I have shown here, with differences tailored for your tastes. After a while, the repetitive nature of juice making will cause you to instinctively know how to make juices that are going to match your tastes, as these lists show my tendencies. In so doing, you will find that you can easily design flavorings on paper, that surprisingly well work out upon first mix. It's because you have spent your time in the Vape Lab, finding what works for you. In the end, it's not magical vapor, but rather your experience that will give you the answers you need to make great juice for you, and your friends and loved ones. :2c: :D

    :2cool:

    Good luck!

Sweetener and Cotton Candy are NOT necessarily interchangeable in all mixes. They do have different flavorings and are used in different ways. I would NOT substitute Sweetener for Cotton Candy in my CD. That's 10% Cotton Candy. Obviously, I'm using the CC for flavor, as well as sweetener. Would be totally different at 10% sweetener, and probably not very good. I don't believe I've ever used sweetener north of 5-6% on anything. Good luck!

Yes, I've used the root beer float. Try something like this:

    Root Beer Float

    Root Beer Float - 10%
Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - 5%
    Sweetener - 4%
    Koolada - 1%

This did the trick for me. Good luck!

What is the name and flavor profile of your favorite juice?

It is called nightmare from my local shop juice e vapes. They state it is mango strawberry with an assortment of melons. I got them to say honeydew was in it and I can definitely taste melons but it's weird. It almost tastes like a honeydew/cantaloupe gum... There is actually a gum out there I have had that tastes just like it but can't remember what it was?

    And Bill's:

    Cream Fantastico

    Blueberry Extra - 8%
    Strawberries and Cream - 7%
    Vanilla Swirl - 5%
    Bavarian Cream - 4%
    Cotton Candy - 4%
    Sweetener - 2%

Think I'll also try an additional mix with Blueberry Wild instead of Extra since I have 120ml of it and it's my favorite!

I inadvertently left Cream Fantastico off of my list of good recipes I made. That got me started on the importance of creams and vanillas. That is a very excellent recipe and I've thought about mixing half or so of that with other primary flavor mixes. Maybe banana since I like strawberry and banana. That would be an ADV for me, and it was while I used up 50ml or so of it, but there are so many great recipes here, and so little time to vape them!!!! I'm also thinking about mixing up a good quantity of just the Cream Fantastico flavorings, without any base. Just because in itself it's a complicated 7 flavor mix.

I did not experiment with a lot of commercial juices (because of the cost of experimenting at $10/ounce and up) but my favorite commercial juice is Charlie Noble's Neptunes Nectar, which is advertised as Strawberry, Banana and Cream. But the cream part is very thick and heavy and luscious. I've never figured out to reproduce that. I just tried something with (all TFA) Banana Cream (10%), Strawberries and Cream (5%), Vanilla Custard (8%) and Vanilla Swirl (8%) but that didn't do it. I wish I could figure out what "cream" formula they used.

I'm going to try some Blueberry Wild myself, next order, just because it is discussed so much here. I only have Blueberry Extra at the moment.

Yea, the Blueberry Wild and Vanilla Swirl have become two of my primary flavors!
Thanks to Andria, I have put 5 of my vanillas on the shelf for a while. My brain hurts much less!!

So, in mixing new recipes, I start at 5ml with lower %'s and then test and adjust.
Here is the slightly tweaked version for my tastebuds:

    Blueberry Wild - 8%
    Strawberries and Cream - 5%
    Vanilla Swirl - 5%
    DX Bavarian Cream - 2%
    Cotton Candy - 1%
    Sweetener - 3%

    Thanks Bill!
