hey, first time on here. newbie to the whole handgun thing. to tell you the truth, i haven't shot a firearm in 20 years. use to as a kid till i turned 13, then somehow just stopped for no reason. i blame not going to the ranch and keeping myself occupied with music more than not. anyway, just got myself a springfield xd 9mm. sad thing is i can't find any freakin' ammo to take to the range or to my friends ranch to go shooting. he and his dad made a makeshift shooting range out on their ranch, but he's been stocking up on ammo for the day when we can all go out together and go shooting. i'm just thinking of biting the bullet and getting a large quantity and keeping 300 for myself and using the rest for target shooting (since that's what i did when i was kid and loved it). i hope to get well enough to eventually move on to rifles again and start skeet shooting. always wanted to learn.
what's a good cheap rifle to get started once i decide to make the investment? right now concentrating on a guitar amp and a nice slr. also if i seem like a newbie, it's because i am. i havent' fired anything since i was 13. havent used a compound bow either.
Welcome! You're going to love the XD 9mm. What size is it?
Before we can suggest anything, there are a few questions you need to answer. What type of rifle do you want? Semi-auto, bolt, lever, break or pump? What caliber? Budget? And most importantly, what will be the primary use of the rifle? Home defense, plinking, long range precision shooting, SHTF rifle?
If semi auto in .223/5.56, I'd go ahead and try to find an AR-15. Like a S&W M&P15 or a Palmetto State Armory. If you can find it and afford it, Colt makes a great rifle. Before you buy, let us know how much it is, if you'd like to. We can all let you know if it's a good deal or not. Just be patient and expect to see a lot of BS panic pricing.
If you want a lever gun, Rossi makes a sweet fire stick. I really, really love my M92 .357Mag lever Rossi.
Bolt action: Can't go wrong with a Mosin Nagant. Super cheap and really fun to shoot (if you have a recoil absorbing rubber .... stock pad- they really do hurt, and I'm not recoil sensitive at all). Or if you want something new, a Tikka or Remington 700 in either .223/5.56 or .308 is great.
If you really want to shoot for cheap, a Savage MKII is an awesome little .22LR bolt rifle. The MKII FV-SR comes with a threaded bull barrel for a sound suppressor. A suppressor isn't necessary and a bit of a PITA to obtain, but for me 100% worth it.
Another awesome rifle is Swiss army surplus K31. Talk about great engineering and some awesome history.
Ammo is going to be tough to find for now, but it will be back in stock like normal when all the BS blows over. There are a few ammo/gun search engines that will help you. Also, if it's out of stock, click on the 'notify me' link and it'll email you when it's back in stock. Just be ready to jump; ammo's been selling out pretty much everywhere in minutes.
