Well if anodized aluminum is an option because it would conduct heat well and the coating is an insulator I had an idea but your wives are not gona like it.....
Whats round, hollow, anodized and comes in all sizes? Knitting Needles! I may have to run to Michaels and have a look at these tomorrow, well if they are open.

The trick is to submerge your tube in a swallow bowl of water as your cutting. Just be careful not to get your dremel wet. It's easy once you get going its like cutting butter. Let the saw blade do the cutting.

This is the diamond cut off wheel I use to manually polish the ends of the tubes.

I do not flame polish any more, and do not attach the wheel to a dremel. I hand sand the ends with the flat side of the wheel until it is flat and no cracks or chips are visable.

Look at MSDS on anodized aluminum. In the event of over heating or chipping the anodized area. Nothing I see suggests it'd be a good idea to inhale. IMO, safer sticking with SS at that point..

The body piercing plugs I posted a link to are anodized titanium. Not sure what problems would come of that. Titanium oxide is used in everything but I haven't read an MSDS and YMMV.

Heat temperature isnt necessarly the only factor when it comes to thermal shocking. It also depends on annealing. It only takes one bad batch of poorly annealed glass tubes to be bought up by one of us and literally have it blow up in our faces. One example I can think of is say your pv is in the car on a cold winter day. You come in the house and fire it up. So along with a bad batch of un annealed glass along with the extreme temperature change chances are you'd have extreme thermal shock.
I'm not saying this is not a great idea Dan. I'm just saying we should use quartz tubes. Here is my supplier I use to buy my quartz tubes.

Just placed my order. Fused Quartz Tubing Let the fun begin. Their site says they will cut to size. I wonder if they would be interested in doing a batch for us pre-cut to the size we need. That could be an interesting Co-Op. What length is appropriate? I'm interested in the second configuration we've discussed - going from just below the top of the wick to the top of the tank, not extending all the way into the tank.

Maybe this has already been ruled out, but what about ceramic tubing? Ceramic is what heating elements and high powered resistors are often wound on...there are ceramic tube fuses, like the Pyrex tube ones some have tried.

I don't even have an RBA yet (mine is supposedly on it's way from China), but this insulated coil method seems very promising!

I don't believe its possible. Quartz melting point is 1600 degrees. By the time the wire is embedded or dipped into the quartz the metal would be completely melted. Another reason why it's not a good idea is melting quartz is very hazardous. You need professional venting system.

Bedazzle,

How hard would it be to make up some coils and "dip" them in molten quartz? With the coil sealed in quartz and a hole to slide your wick through you could have coils that last a very long time.
