Hey billherbst,

I have been reading though out this very long thread and I wanted to ask you a question...

How do you reconcile your changing opinions of a juice, with the changes the juice itself goes through upon aging?

I don't. A good scientist carefully designs experiments to control all the variables but one. Vaping doesn't lend itself to good science because multiple variables always exist, in this case, my changing palate (which I know very well does shift over time) and any chemical changes in the flavor of juices themselves (from steeping/aging, different production runs, unannounced alterations in the recipe/formula on the part of the vendor, etc.). Or maybe I'm just a lousy scientist. LOL.

I try to share my experience as well as I can---being a good reporter is important to me---but as to what exactly causes what, I have to fall back on the old defense that "it's art, not science."

Given that uncertainty as a basic fact, I might also suggest that many of us develop sensitivities that help somewhat in distinguishing factors such as palate changes from juice changes. Call it what you will---intuition, subtle perceptions, or even "fuzzy logic" tend to increase over time with anything we care about and do a lot, so that we often "have a feeling" for these different causal factors and their proportions or interaction. Still, those subtle skills are far from precise or infallible.

I had an inkling that you didn't reconcile, per se, but I couldn't figure a out a different way to ask the question to get this response. So, I guesss I did just fine? Good answer, by the way!!!

"Good reporter"...

Hey guys,

I finally managed to get some PV4 and BWB RY4, and was wondering, what's the recommended steep time for these? I haven't quite had the best track record with letting things steep, but have finally learned my lesson after having something truly horrid turn into something blissful after I was able to exhibit some restraint and give it a couple of weeks in a dark drawer to blend. Wow.

The PV4 isn't here yet, but the BWB arrived today, and I'll admit to jumping the gun and sampling a couple of drops right away. Blech. Definitely needs some alone time in a dark place, or so I assume, since everyone seems to act like it's the juice-of-the-gods. ;)

bwb ry4...... Yeah its pretty good :) some dont like , other love it to death and its there "magic" juice but to me its probably the best custom variant i have try (havent try many) and i loved the best fresh with that strong cedar taste that people dont seem to care about but thats it to me and to be honest if you didnt like it now theres high chances you wont like after a while become it only turns more "light" :) again atleast for me.

And to add bwb ry4 is good...but I have learned NO juice is worth all the hype. Seems there are some much better than others, but I have yet to taste something that truly knocks my socks off and think-this is amazing it tastes exactly like (insert flavor here) and can't get enough of it

I think if I found that, id pay $50 a bottle no prob.

Just wanted to throw a few updates out there...

VapeBig's RY4, which I really ragged on previously, does not taste like wet socks once it's had plenty of steep time. I'd originally given the bottle away in disgust, but temporarily borrowed it back so I could sample it two months down the road, and sure enough, it had matured. Still not my favorite flavor, but blended enough to be vapable with no pain. Has a good body to it now, and plenty smooth, but still has the pine needle (or cedar, as someone else called it) taste. I could probably get used to that, but since there are other juices that better fit my tastes, why bother? Still, if you're partial to this type of RY4, it is good after a long steep-time.

AltCig's RY4 is back in the "unknown zone" for the time being. I loved their subtle "peanut oil" (ish) flavor that came out with steeping, but they've run into a bit of a problem in recent weeks. Apparently their tobacco extract's flavor suddenly changed without warning, and the supplier gave them some lame excuse. Bottom line, don't blame AltCig (trust me, they're the nicest vendors you'll ever meet, and are truly on "our side"), but at the moment, until they figure things out, their RY4 is really, really... unpleasant. This new extract is causing it to have a sour, ammonia-like taste that's just overpowering, at least to me, and doesn't seem to fade with steeping. The peanut oil taste is completely gone, so if you've got an old bottle, hold onto it for the time being.

On the bright side, I can't give any details right now, but can tell ya there are a couple of things in the works (and verified as freakin' awesome) that you're gonna love. I shared some ideas with AltCig, and helped test some samples, and a couple of them worked incredibly well. I'm also kind of hoping that the extract used for the "good" sample (one didn't have it at all) might solve the aforementioned RY4 problem. Updates to come.

Thanks for your enduring efforts, Bill.

There can be substantial differences in flavor provided by different equipment, though a good flavor is usually good despite the equipment. The better equipment can make the better flavors shine.

I suspect your choices of equipment have varied over time as it does for many of us. Yet, being a connoisseur, at least in the RY4 catagory of flavors, you may have some standards that you use for your samplings. Perhaps you can share with us the type(s) of cartos/attys or other than may be common among your trails of RY4. I'll not be surprized if that is mentioned, even bold a few places in the past 1634 posts. I hope you understand my asking.

Keep up the good work, Bill

Kat, whichever Renegade you have, would you consider reviewing it for us here on the thread? That'd be great.

Bill, no, but thank you. A reviewer, I am not. I'm a taster and an appreciator of those who can put these subtleties into eloquent and flowery sentences. I am an enjoyer of all that you guys offer in that regard. And with that said, I tip my hat and applaud you all, and thank you. :)

(I'm not even good at doing that. My hat just fell on the floor.)

My curiosity jumped me when I realized I hadn't really given my Renegade much of a chance, and then could not recall if it was in fact an RY4. I've been having a love affair with another NLV juice and at the moment, and with its blinding brightness, I can't even see my other 37 million bottles of juice.

I didn't like BWB's RY4 until about 45 days. Yes, a full month and a half! Now it is 6 months old, and better still.

PV4 should be good day one. It is more dessert than tobacco imo.

Really, hangdude? You find it more dessert than tobacco? I just gave it a sniff. I smell one day old cooked asparagus.

(See why I don't do reviews, Bill?)

Cool,

If you're asking what equipment I use to review or vape RY4s, the answer is nothing that's in any way unusual or worthy of special note. All my hardware is 510-based.

For atties, I'm almost exclusively a 306 guy---either LR or SR, depending on the power source. I use garden-variety 306s (Joye, Cisco, IKV). I'm unwilling to spend $22 on an HH357 that has quirks and a learning curve, and I'd love to get an i06 or two, but Ikenvape's site seems permanently mired in some internet hell and won't ever let me order anything. How does Isaac stay in business when his site is screwed up for months on end? I have a crapload of 510 atties, but I find the flavor better with the 306s.

As for cartos, I use all the usual suspects: Boge LR2.0 and SR3.0 (and now I'm starting on the new XXL Boges), SmokTech 1.7 Resurrectors, 2.0 XL single-coils, and dual coils in varied resistance (1.5-1.6, 2.0, and 2.5). I also have some Kanger LR horizontal coils, which are OK, and a big box of 50 Good Prophets SR cartos that I got for 60¢ each during a sale, but the damned center posts of those are too loose and have to be pulled out all the time, plus their draw is airy and ragged. I did luckily discover that those work better in tanks, so I'm using them up.

I also have way too many Ultimate CE2 clearos and Micromizer X7s in various resistances, plus some Echo-e single- and dual-coils. All those were OK at first, but I'm phasing them out. I find that I am always drawn back to cartos with polyfill because of the stiffer draw and greater impact. Yeah, dripping's great for purity of flavor and all that, but it is a royal pain. I drip only to test out new juices. I do have four bottom-feeders reserved for certain juices that benefit from the greater clarity of atties---Boba's, Kona Coffee Milkshake, etc. Otherwise, my preference day-in and day-out is for polyfill cartos.

Mostly, I use LR stuff on my lower-voltage eGo batts and box mods, but I have a bunch of 5.0V regulated boxes along with many 18650 tube mods (Omegas, MaxiRoughStacks, Diamond mods, E-Powers, an Indulgence V3, and a Volt), all of which I run with the green 4.8V nimh batteries. I love those batteries. They start off fresh off the charger at 5.4 volts, but they're very "gentle," with a voltage drop under load of almost one volt, which puts them right in the mid-4V sweet spot. When they discharge down below 5 volts unloaded, I swap 'em out. Anyway, LR cartos seem to vape beautifully on all that equipment.

Then I have all my VV mods. I use either dual coils or standard 3.0 single coil cartos with all those, often in tanks, run between 4.5 and 5.5 volts.

The 50 RY4s I keep carto-loaded on my desk (for comparison testing) are mostly in Boge LR2.0s, with some in SmokTech 1.5 ohm dual coils.

I'm vapin my last 15 mils of RAF (cryin' while doin' so). Gosh I hope they come out with somthin' as good as raf cause i'll be missin' it somethin' fierce. Oh and I'm usin' a GLV2 powered I06 atty @ 2.5 ohms. Those atty's are the bomb! Thier RY4 is no slouch either. Oh and thanks Bill; one of the better threads I scan. And sorry for the hillbilly inflections (Im actually transplanted her from California). I thought these folks was hillbillies now I are one!
