I had a friend who made jewelry (art). She had this cool gizmo that looked like an old fashioned laundry ringer (about that size too). You know, two rollers pinching your clothes and a crank to run it. And an adjustment for thickness. (Like a pasta maker). Only hers was for wire.

She moved to oregon! Wish she hadn't done that!

I am in oregon, maybe I look up the jeweler and play with the toys....it is a small world after all. I have re-tasked most of my fly tying gear to coil building and wick making. I am dubbing my wicks now( consult your local fly tier for details), and twisting coils on my rotary vise. Interesting how similar the two crafts are. The only downside is that I have more Rene trials than green .... skunks at this point. The fish are safer, and so I am I , I guess...

René arrived today. She is a a feisty thing but a firm hand and determination got her to do what I wanted. Damn is she fine!

Wrapped 10 wraps, 1/16 bore, cotton wick on an ERA clone. Excellent flavor and smooth vapor production. I'll give her some time before I decide to keep her around or not but the first encounter is going well.

I'd suggest that anyone considering this wire become proficient in making coils with 26 gauge Nichrome first. If you can't make a picture quality coil with the Nichrome, René is going to be a pretty big headache.

Tightly twisted Rene on Stratus22 @ .7 ohm with cotton.
Twisted she is a a real booger to make conform.
Had her all tight then installed, needed to adjust atty contact screw a little, retightened post and she opened up a little.
Boy does she make a racket and throw stuff everywhere before she gets a little heat in her!
Wife was jealous so I had to stop playing with Rene and go upstairs.

This has me hesitant in ordering some rene. Ive only worked with 30ga kanthal. Should I just go ahead and give it a try or order some 26ga first?

Definitely! You don't even know if you like thicker wire yet. Try some 28 and 26g Nichrome first. If you really like the 26 g and get good at coiling it, only then consider René. It is pretty much just an experiment at this point and it is not at all easy to coil.

Decided to try to tame this stuff by pinching the coils in my needle nose pliers and then heating it with my torch.

Worked perfectly but I ruined my best set of needle nose. So...if you decide to try it...use an old crappy set.

you goose-beaked your needle-nose, my good man

For the sake of science(and frustration), I decided to make me a coil yesterday of the last of my 26g kanthal. I felt like the Rene was better and switching back definitely proved it to me, now it just seems like something is missing from my vape. Looks like tonight I will be rolling up another Rene coil and putting my bottom ..... back to work. Hopefully this time though I dont have the coil pop during the dry burn before I put the cotton in. It happened twice on sunday night hence the 26g kanthal coil. First time it was on its own and the second was my own damn fault, I accidently touched the base of my atty while moving the coil while firing. On a side note when a Rene coil lets go it is kinda spectacular flash as it dies
