They have strict eating times and are crate fed. He's UGLY with the other dogs as well. It's so sad. He's such a sweet boy with people he trusts, but there's only about 5 of them in the whole world.

Ya...that is sad. The one I dealt with was a 1 person dog. He got along well enough with those of us he saw on a regular basis, but you couldn't come or go without his owner's verbal permission or he'd wig out. And a 9yr old girl got her face bit for trying to hug him while he was near his food dish....the girl was his owner's daughter. I had to drive her to the ER so they could stitch her upper lip and nostril back together...among other holes that were left in her cheek and chin. At the time, I had no idea he was that aggressive. The worst part is about a year later he went after her younger sister outside for no reason that we were aware of. Bit her in the face too....she was only about 3 yrs old. :(

Oh no! That is awful! Yeah, this dog is very close to the same. He has a horrible problem with fear and resource guarding. The only people frequently around who he hasn't bit is the male owner and my DH. He bit me once because he had something in his mouth that he shouldn't and I tried to get the item back. If he's not guarding an item, the chosen few can do anything to him. I can walk right up to him, grab his face and kiss him on the mouth. He's an angel and a demon at the same time...it's so frustrating!

If it were my home and I had a dog like that and had a baby around, I would find a better home for the dog. Not because I'm mean, but I just couldn't take the chance on something going wrong. After the second biting incident, the dog's owner lost his temper and abused the dog. I wished at that point that he had just put the dog down instead of beating it. He said he was going to put the dog down, but I know he didn't. Before I met that dog, I never would have said something like this...and I wasn't a parent back then. But after seeing how quickly things can happen, I would never choose to keep a dog that has aggression issues of any kind around an infant. I hope they can find a solution and a way to help him break that kind behavior. That is a tough position they are in. There are people out there that are equipped to deal with dogs like that in a positive manner....just not many of them. That guy certainly proved to not be capable. :grr:

Wow, that story is wrong on so many levels. The problem is that many of these dogs show agression based on fear. So I'm sure that because he abused the dog afterwards, things never got better. And you can never predict what your dog is going to be fearful of. It could be something as simple as a leaf blowing in the backyard.
I'm worried about what is going to happen in the future...and even more worried that I'm going to end up being the owner of a bitey Chow. That's why I was looking into the ThunderShirt. I can't have a dog in the Cat House, but he won't have any other options if the owners have to give him up.

Well you have a big heart...and I'm sure that you will do fine with a dog like that because of your relationship with him...but I would recommend seeking help from some local trainers in dealing with him, before you open your home to him. He needs confidence. But if it seems like it would be too much ....there are rescues out there that can help.

So am I, but I need to pay the bills and that means getting up early for work.
I'm sitting here do my usual trawl through ECF to catch up on what I've missed and then I had better get some work done.
Nice talking with you.
Regards
Ian

LOL...I cant help it. I'm a sucka for a big fluffy animal. He definitely needs professional help...and he's had some already. But, if you can't make the time for the training exercises, then you won't get much in results. That's why I sort of believe the old saying, there's no such thing as bad dogs, just bad owners. It's not that all owners are bad, but if you don't have the time to work with the dog, things aren't going to change. I'm afraid that's the situation here.

pmoraldo,
I snapped at him this morning about 3am and told him why don't he just take his rear elsewhere tommorrow. The hardest thing about this is the kids.............he has raised the girls since birth, my youngest boy since 9 months, and my oldest boy since 2.5 yrs. The girls isn't his(long story d no it wasn't cheating it was during a separation).
