hey jen, correct me if i'm wrong but isn't your dads reader a nook? because kindle is a different format and those books wont work on kindle
Dad's is a nook, but he has it in his mind that I need a kindle fire hd, because I like pictures so much. I'm undecided though...am thinking a plain Jane nook and a new camera lens. I'll decide when I get home and can properly surf/shop.

tab does reader and web great. with moon reader app its great for reading in bed with backlit screen
i have huge library of ebooks. any requests just let me know. i think i can email them as an attachment if small enough file
My wife has a Kindle and "borrows" books from our public library for free all the time!
I have one of these with 4g, and it's nice but the camera makes me insane. Fixed focus only, no flash, no zoom. It can't even scan a friggin' barcode. Apart from that, though, it's sweeeeet!

most readers allow that now. i live in a small town and selection is limited.

I just got a Kindle Fire, I know there is a lot of stuff you can do with them that I haven't figured out yet. I think it will be great for a movie on the plane when I go visit the kids. Also, figured out how to get my favorite knitting patterns on it, so I always have them available. There is a book you can get for free (I think today is the last day) Mastering the Kindle Fire: Sharon Vaknin: Amazon.com: Kindle Store with lots of good info in it. Haven't read it all yet, but what I've read has been very helpful.
That's about all it's good for. I dig the GPS and always-connected functionality of it though. I'm one of those no-cellphone types so this gives me a mobile that nobody can call me on

WooHoo...just ordered Nook HD Tablet online. I came in dad's office to tell him Andy's cd won't work on a kindle. He was already on the Barnes & nobles website.

anymore i dont rcommend the readers nook or kindle just because the android tablets are so much more versatile.
with a free app called moonreader you can read both kindle and nook book formats and many more .
also the tablet functions are better than the reader versions

please dont anyone be offended there is nothing wrong with kindle or nook IMO the tablets just do more for the same price

i know apple has a CULT following. i have never drank that koolaid. i just cant see paying 2 to 3 times the price for a computer thats the same hardware and software as a PC. i have never had a problem with a PC that a windows for dummies book would not fix
