Hi Ray :)

My FIL wrecked on his bike last spring. It was awful. He was suffering from dehydration and didn't know it. Passed out while driving down the road in AZ. He broke his foot and neck and has spent much of this time recovering from a truly terrifying experience. The terrifying part came from the ICU when he realized how much danger he was in, how close he was to death. He has no recollection of the accident itself. He has been going through the typical depression and PTSD associated with near death experiences. He just bought himself a new bike and finally got back on. I hope that you too, will get back on. Even if for one more ride. It has done wonders for his soul.

I am so sorry to hear about your FIL. AZ has no helmet law, and every time I cross over the border from CA or NV I immediately remove mine. In ICU we call motorcycle riders "organ donors". I am an organ donor  Just out of curiosity, was FIL wearing a helmet?

Yes, absolutely he was. Thank you....but he's much better. Kind of a late mid life crisis for him....He's turning 70 this year...and has now lost all of his older relatives. He's now the oldest in his line. So the experience left him feeling really weird about life in general.

When you say, absolutely he was, I have to admit I have a different view I guess. I remove my helmet because I have seen what happens to people in an accident. I would rather go out doing something I love than live with some of the consequences I have seen some people with helmets who may have life, but have no quality. It is an individual decision, DH wants everything done and values life in any state; I do not want life support past the point of immediately post accident if the prognosis is going to be a life without my mind intact. If I am a vegetable, save the resources for someone who has value to humanity. But then again, DH has never cared for people who have no chance of ever being the sentient, loving human they were, yet the family wants everything done. He has never watched bodies deteriorate over time like I have, and the pain I inflict on them with even the most tender of care. I am very jaded, especially now I am disabled and cannot even do the work I love.

Your FIL must be a very strong 70 years old, and God bless him!

Sure! I completely understand your position and respect it. I think it should be personal choice. But I don't expect to see it happen in most states. He, like you uses his choice....and luckily for him, it gave him the opportunity to continue,... this time.

yes, I have a hard time seeing him as 70. Everyone keeps saying he is old and I immediately want to defend. I am starting to see the age now, but I don't know if its because the accident slowed him down and shook him to the core of if I'm just catching up in age. He and my MIL are both super healthy and active. For her 65th birthday, she jumped out of a plane. I want to be like them when I get there.

Just got home from seeing Les Miserables. I don't generally cry at movies, cause I'm tough like that, but I had tears in my eyes 3 times during that movie, OK, 6 times. It was really a great story. Russell Crow is not a great singer, but for his character, I thought the singing suited him. I need to read the book now. Ann Hathaway, was so good, really all of them were great. That is a movie I will buy when it comes out. So glad I got to see it at a theater!
