i would like to see some Fios stats here. Unfortunately its not offered in my area.

I don't know very much about web availability but it seems to me that the government regulators really do a number on people by not letting competition between providers occur. It seems as though many people do not have choice and have to pay the price or get nothing at all. It all seems rigged for the companies that operate the services and the people that legislate and regulate.

i am not a geek but through my years of experience/haha

i found that if i had a slow connection and couldn't watch youtubes or use certain websites that required speed then Linux was a great OS

other than that if i used windows i would find a fast browser.

the experts would know if i am right or wrong.

I still have a old laptop that i put Puppy linux on because it didn't have the memory/ram to take any windows above 98 and that is obsolete now.My Puppy is fast :)

You're geeky enough to fly right over my head! :)
I use the Windows Vista that was already installed. Google Chrome for everything except Pinterest, which gets FireFox. I cleared all cookies and caches about a week ago.

I've jumped through hoops, calling the provider and all that mess for the past two sales. Wasn't going to this round, but seeing that I really do absolutely have the worst speed in REOvil, I'm thinking I might have to try to speed things up again.

Problem is that cities sign agreements with certain companies so that they will wire their communities. This gives the city a kick back of sorts with free public access chanel etc... So the residents suffer.

Example: I could only get TWC at my house. cost me about 150 for basic cable and internet and phone.

My sister-in-law had TWC in a competitve city. Three cable companies. She paid $75 for all the channels including HBO and internet and phone. Sucks to be in a locked city...(This was years ago so no telling if it is the same)

Just what they call their fastest speed. If I switched to TWC I could get a much faster speed. But, Earthlink is a bit cheaper for this speed. Not much. But, enough.

TWC can be pushy on the phone. I've had horrible experiences with them. Horrible. So bad that when I signed up for earthlink and a TWC installer came I told him to leave. LOL.

I let them come back later. But, it was just funny at the time. I didn't know that earthlink bought space on TWC's lines.
I looked into Earthlink a few years ago and found out they use the whole Timewarner infrastructure to deliver the goods. The difference was that support for the system was India based. I like to talk to someone I can understand so I was stuck with Timewarner. One thing and its the only thing, that i can say it good about Roadrunner is their customer service over the phone.

I fondly remember the days of hating Timewarner. I wish I could have those days again!

$89 and some change just for the internet here. :( To have any kind of cable I would have to have another satelitte, and another bill.
No thanks, I'm happy with the antenna.

And my Kuerig just broke....grrrrr! Thank goodness for the three year old canister of Folgers instant I keep for such emergencies. :)

aah. yes, multiple simultaneous devices suck it down fast.

chances are your connection (isp or cable or dsl modem, whatever) is saturated. most likely, upgrading your service is your only option, although if you read the earlier posts, Buddy's (element77) modem appears to be crap, so getting a better one there might help.

there's a slight chance that your wifi router is also saturated. it's been a few years since i did the math, but if your router is slower than "N", that migth contribute to slowness, especially if some of your devices can do "N"

lastly, a few of us have "dual band" N wifi routers. last time i checked, these were the fastest home wifi routers available. mebbe still are.

the thing about dual band routers is that they were introduced before pc's or devices (tablets, phones, etc) were offered with dual band network cards or chips. Doh! :)

but anyone with a dual band router who has a recently made pc or device should check the device to see if it can use the second band. that may reduce wifi saturation on the older band.

i just gave myself a geek overdose. i hope i can find 'Dumb and Dumber' or the Three Stooges on tv.

nyuck, nyuck
:)

Hey Dennis. this is AMERICA ! Speak English ! (but not the King's). Press 1 for Española.
But seriously, what is the Geek take on AVG (free) ? I have an ex-daughter in law who worked customer service in banking that swore by it, so that's what I've been using. Maybe I should use that to 'scan' whatever....

AVG is pretty good. I've found that Microsoft Essentials is just as good and free! No ads etc. I've not had any issues with viruses etc. Since I made the change. YMMV. :D

Morning everyone, hope y'all are having a great one.

Been pretty sick here and it makes me realize how much I love the REO ..........

I have a bunch of other stuff I like to vape but most of it is just sitting needing cleaning and re-builds. Ya they are not much more work than a REO but enough that I'm just letting them sit while I recoup ...... Gotta love the simple reliable REOs ... No fuss no muss, just good vapin'

Starting to get jacked up about the possible new woodvil heading my way soon ..... :)

Howdy Reo-fam! Picked up a bug last few days. I've avoided getting full blown sick by drowning it with vitamin C and echinacea. Couldnt go anywhere for Xmas because I didnt want to pass it on, especially to kids. Still enjoyed all the sights and sounds I could see out my windows and on TV. Really enjoyed reading all of you as I always do. One of my high points was watching the entire Breaking Bad series, which I had never seen before. Watching the last few episodes now. It's so well written and acted. Well, back to my couch with an extra thick duvet and a big mug of hot chocolate.

A big welcome to all the new folks and huge huggss and backslaps all around. Special wishes for Becky, Andy, Ray, Alice, Norman, Michellen, and anyone else who's gone missing.

to be safe, you should start wearing clothes when at the computer :)

Trojan known as "Ghost Rat" that allows attackers to gain complete, real-time control.[3] Such a computer can be controlled or inspected by its hackers, and even has the ability to turn on the camera and audio-recording functions of an infected computer that has such capabilities, enabling monitors to see and hear what goes on in a room.
