Where can I order glasses online for a reasonable price ?
I will second Walmart, although I didn't fare as well. I did buy titanium frames for 100.00 but the lenses cost around 200, so $300 altogether, and that was in 2011. I honestly don't know what my lenses cost now and I just keep having new lenses put in these frames. Really want contacts again, but with the way my allergies are now it would be a problem

My family has a history of glaucoma, both my parents are treated for it, so i have regular eye tests because it beats going blind.
Yikes.

HRH and i have experience of a few different health care systems, so we have perhaps a different perspective on it than most.
What we do notice is that where the government funds the cost of care, it's generally the case that they prefer you to not visit a doctor (because that's expensive) and as a result, a lot of the routine medicines are available over the counter and for little cost.
Here, even routine stuff has to be prescribed, at the cost of a doctor visit, and typically under the guise of safety.
But since the US is currently in the grip of an opiate misuse epidemic, safety is really a baseless argument.

As to the cost of care, what we really need to consider is value for money and it's pretty clear that in that respect Americans are not getting it, if you look at cost divided by life expectancy. Moreover, the cost has been increasing relentlessly, but that's what happens when the profit motive is in play and there are shareholders to pay.

It's fair to say that emergency care is excellent in all developed countries, but where the difference is striking is in the research facilities that are at the cutting (!) edge of medicine and in those, the US is unparalleled.

HRH's standard insurance was 140 Euros a month and a) it's the law b) then doctor visits and the rest is at no cost. They will also take the money directly from your wages, whether you like it or not, so pause and consider that for a second.

Where i'm from, the system was set up after the second world war in anticipation of making a 'land fit for heroes' and part of the expansion of social care and housing that was allied to that. The difference is that the age a man could expect to die then was 68. Go to Liverpool town centre on a Friday night and i'll give you shorter odds than that.

T
Interesting perspective. Jup we are cutting edge on medical advancements. I do have an opinion on that, but will keep it to myself.

Somewhat related...has anyone ever been to a chiropractor for back pain? Did it help?
Two different times I've been to a chiropractor when I could barely walk, and I seriously mean it took me forever and was all I could do to just walk into the office. You really can't even call what I did walking. They helped me tremendously. I was still in a ton of pain, but I at least could walk upright. The problem with it is, if you're seriously screwed up like I was (am), it takes soooooo long for them to actually fix anything. Sometimes a year or two. They nudge bones back where they need to be, and of course, the muscles drag the bones back out of place, cuz that's what they're used to. Nudge again, drag back.......ad infinitum. But if you can stick with it, they really do a good job!

Have you been to a doctor yet to find out what is causing the back pain? Personally I wouldn't see a chiropractor until I knew what was causing the pain.
My experience has been that a chiropractor will be able to tell what is causing the pain MUCH quicker than a doc will. Sloth, if they don't take xrays before they touch you........ go to a different one. And definitely get recommendations if you can before you choose one. Maybe try an online board in your area if there is one for folks who have been to them

Just to give you an example of how in tune a good one is to bones, nerves, etc. I went one day for regular adjustment. I had a horrible headache. Close to migraine pain headache. I told him, before you do the adjustment, can you do my neck, this headache is horrible. Ok, so he starts feeling around on my neck, and says.....found your headache....... crack. It lessened a bit but wasn't gone. He was still feeling my neck. I started to say that wasn't it.... but before I could get the words out, he says.......newp, that wasn't it........this is it. Craaaccckkkkk instantly my headache was gone! I said, JUP that was it!

I have a spine disease that caused my spine to deform, boneloss in numerous vertebrae and a few herniated discs; I've always wondered myself but I imagine it would do more harm than good in my case. Medication and bed rest is all that works for me :( I hear they work wonders for normal backs lol

I went to a chiropractor for back pain & it made it worse. He said my back needed to be articulated, but after a cat scan I learned that I had a herniated disk & the specialist prescribed inactivity.

It's terrible going through all the doctors first. Primary care physician, rheumatologist, neurologist, X-rays Mris ct scans, then finally the dope specialist I mean pain specialist. insurance would rather feed you drugs than do surgery, plus there's the chance of paralysis. Sometimes you have to take medication or suffer.:|

Oh my can't like that. I am so sorry you're dealing with that. I'm in a similar situation myself. It's not a disease for me, (I don't think) but a lot of disc degeneration, several bulging discs, thank goodness not herniated yet, but I could literally sneeze wrong and cause that, nerve issues, lots of other stuff going on. Constant pain is no fun. I watch those advil commercials....... 1 advil fixes me right up all day...... and I wanna throw sumpthin at the Tv. lol

There are some bad ones. I went to one that a friend wanted me to go to, she also did accupressure or something..... omggggg I was in much worse shape afterwards. She did something in my foot, I yelped, she asked where it hurt, I told her my ear.....she said that was where it was supposed to hurt. Later my friend said, Jup, she's made big grown men cry on her table...... You couldn't have led with that before we went??????? I'd have never gone.

Yeah it can be a pain going thru all the steps sometimes.
I have a degenerating spine disease. I have lost 2.5 inches in height over the last few years, and have constant pain when I'm on my feet. Using a cane when I'm up and moving around helps. A little Motrin every day helps somewhat, but that's it, I'm not taking any heavy duty pain killers, at least not yet. I wish a chiropractor could help, but I don't think so. And there ain't nobody cutting on my back.

Thousands of miles with a 40lb bag on my back. Pain is a strong word for what I experience...aches is more like it. Yoga helps a lot if done on the reg but how often does a Sloth really do Yoga,

Preeeeeecisely. Hate the game, not the player, as Noam Chomsky says (or is it Michael Jordan? I get the two confused).

I think the most glaring difference between the US and most other developed countries is the nakedness of this ambition. Up here, you get pretty much everything but medicines and elective surgeries (and dental, optical) covered with basic medical insurance for $75 CDN/month at most, less for those of low income. Now, you wait a very long time for some procedures (eg, cataracts), but the care quality is good. Where we see the profit motive in full force is with respect to some medicines, particularly new ones in the 'recoup R&D costs' phase. This cost is usually covered by employment benefit packages (along with most dental and optical), as is the basic insurance premium.

One quirk of this system is that doctors get paid by the visit. I have congenitally thick corneas and get tested for glaucoma regularly like trunker. This is done with three 5 minute appointments on separate days. Can't be one. Can't be on the same day.

DJD here and terrified of chiros !
Went once, specifically said NOT to wrench my neck - the SOB did anyway !
I was frozen with fear for a few minutes until I got the nerve to get up and walk out.

My best money spent for my back is my inversion table. It was love at first flip !
And - I control it.

I have wondered about those. I've often wish someone could just pick me up by my head and let me dangle! Same thing kinda just upside down

About 15 years ago they wanted to do some fusion.
After several talks with the neurosurgeon I got some honesty.
He said it would really only give relief for about 5 -7 years and then another fusion would be needed due to the stress on the adjoining.
I asked if I was at risk for more serious damage if I did nothing and he said no.
Then I asked the ultimate question - if this was you, would you do it - he said NO !

I had weird neck/back stuff for years. Not severe pain but weird stuff. After like TEN YEARS of stumping doctors, including Neuro, with MRI's, etc - I finally went to a highly recommended Chiro, though I didn't expect anything.

He X-rayed, came in the room and said "I'm not touching you - there's something wrong with your neck".
He showed me where, and I took that to my doc.

My doc got me in with the guy who'd fixed HIS neck - chief of neurosurgery at a major research hospital.
So - never been TREATED by a Chiropractor, but I have respect for the trade.

(FYI - HAD he "cracked" my neck, it's quite possible it would have paralyzed me - the "weird" was being caused by stenosis, where the holes in the disks were closing in and touching spinal column...)

And hey, just looked at the original date on this pic.
My neck got fixed FIFTEEN years ago. Still holding my head on, so that's good.
