Good Morning Reonauts. Easing into first cup of coffee....
My daily beaters are still a couple of Classic Grands. Catch cup, old style 510, RM2 old style. They have the newer contacts and spring, but I never go that low in the ohms anyways. Now Cartos and Blind Squonking have been replaced by Adjustable Connectors and Italian Bottles. For someone who drives 100,000 miles a year, the world sure seems to pass me by a lot....

Hi, FF...good to see you. I haven't used those batteries, but if they're so tight that they wouldn't drop down if the hot spring folded, I'd be nervous about using them. I mean, it would essentially nullify the safety feature of the REO.

Thanks. I am just coming back to using my two REOs. I just compared the Orbtronics 3200mAh button top, (battery in question) to a an LG and Sammy flattop and it is about a 16th of an inch longer. Looking at the battery, it seems to have a "plate" at the top and bottom of the battery, under the wrapper, and I am assuming they are for battery safety.

I had a couple of button tops, but I gave them to my long distance wife for her old Provari. I just decided to restart using the REOs because they have a bigger "tank" than my Provari RTAs. My 10-11 hour workdays just needed a little more juice to get through. I tested the REOs and I use half a battery, down to 3.7, with a full bottle of juice. That makes them good for a long work day.

I have spent so much time perfecting the build in my Provari RTAs that flavor is good with them, too. I just haven't used the REOs in a year plus because I tend to prefer the same set-ups. The two REOs are both topped with RM2s.

That brings up another concern; I went through a full bottle in my REO and when cleaning the empty bottle out I couldn't seem to get the flavor smell out. Does anyone know of a better quality bottle and where to get them? I forget where I got mine, but I assume they came with the REOs. Maybe, it is just the particular juice I had filled it with. Now that I think of it, the juice was DIY Banana Nut Bread. I do understand that Banana is hard on plastic, maybe a vinegar soak. I will try a different flavor juice today.

So, I am going to order new button tops and try a different juice. And, hopefully the 10% vinegar solution soak will remove the flavor smell.

Any suggestions going forward would be gratefully accepted.

@PapawBrett , I have the same RM2 old style set-up. Actually, is there a "new" RM2 set-up. I will have to look around for that. Mine just have a single air-hole if that makes a difference. Being away from home I do not have a drill to open it up a tiny bit more.

Also, Italian bottles? Why and Where?

I've always used hot soapy water and then a baking soda soak and rinse. I use A1 steak sauce bottles for my diy batches and this gets the oder out. It might take a longer soak with plastic.

Weeell, I don't think I can fit an A1 Steak Sauce bottle in my REO.

I also DIY into larger glass bottles, but then I fill the little REO bottle from that. The little REO bottle was the one that I could not seem to get cleaned. I will try the vinegar in a minute since I need more coffee. I will let it soak for an hour and then a hot water bath. I really don't want to get into an extensive cleaning process. I will see what an hour-long soak does.

For stubborn odors I will use a Q-tip and Isopropanol. Then rinse repeatedly with hot water and finish up with a dry Q-tip. Seems to work for me, but 40 years of smoking may have killed my taste buds

I was also thinking to label the bottle as a "banana-only" bottle. I do that with syringes. That is the only flavor that I can't seem to get removed.

As for the Orbitronics, personally, I wouldn't use them, especially if they fit too tight to allow the spring to do its job, in the event of a problem.If I'm not mistaken, they are protected L-Ion. Protected batteries are usually a little bit longer than unprotected IMR, which we normally use. I believe Orbitronics are actually relabeled Panasonics. If you want to use button tops, I would suggest getting some AWs, from a reputable supplier such as RTD Vapor or Illumin.

After searching and reading I determined that "Protected" and "Unprotected" have some latitude as to what they mean by different manufacturers. The protected batteries that I got were 69mm in length and REOs need about a 65mm length, being unprotected and button-top.

REOSmod recommends AW brand IMR batteries because they are chemically stable, yet unprotected as some others may define it.

Of course, all batteries should be carried in a case if not being used at the moment in a mod.

Buying batteries is a rather rare event for me and appreciate the input.

The REOs are going to sit until correct batteries arrive.

REOs were originally designed to use button top batteries, with the exception of Woodvils and P67s. Many people use flat tops in REO Grands. I personally don't, because I don't care for the slight additional button throw distance. It's not much, but I notice it. I also had some arcing issues with flat tops, especially with Sony VTC4s and 5s. I never have had visible arcing issues with either AW1600s or 2200s.
Plus, the Orbitronics 3200mAh battery is only a 10 amp CDR battery. It's basically a high performance tactical flashlight battery. In order to maintain a good safety margin, I wouldn't build below about .8 ohms with it.

Aye, I prefer the higher mAh over the amps. I am happy at the 1.0-1.1 ohm level.

I tried some flattops and the connection wasn't consistent. I considered going in and adjusting the switch connector, but a small positive post seems safer.

Oh, I mentioned earlier about cleaning the REO juice bottle and the vinegar soak worked. One hour in a 10% bath. Even the tube and cap have their nice lovely plastic smell back.

Mine has had a strong peppermint juice in it for several months. I cleaned the bottle & tube several days ago using a diluted dish soap. Rinsed everything very well & set it all aside to dry & air out. I can't smell the peppermint at all now.

Anyone have issues with the Italian bottles? Mine do not squonk proper, leaving a dry cotton and full bottle or sometimes a messy innards. Halp.

I expect you have a small leak between the stainless steel cap & the threads. This is common when the Italian bottles are new.

Fortunately there is an easy fix:
>Remove & empty the bottle.
>Assemble the bottle, cap & tubing.
>Pinch the silicone tubing closed & squeeze the bottle until all the air is out.
>This will seat the bottle's threads into the cap's threads, & once the fit is made,you should not need to do it again.

None of this is recommended practice, but it's what i have done for years.

Dropping Reo springs seems to happen when people are using tiddly little atties with hardly any clearance. If you use a Chalice or an O16, then pay extra care to test you coils before you fire them.

As for flavours, coffee seems to be the worst to get rid of, but i'd be interested to hear from the guys that use ultrasonic cleaners to see if those make things easier.

I have used magnets on flat top batteries, and it works fine. However, I don't use REO door magnets. They are small, and they tend to slide. The best ones I've used are old Poldiac switch magnets, that I found in my spare parts box. They are 7mm OD, and fit perfectly in the cut out in the REO Grand delrin. I'm sure Woodvils magnets would work also. They are a little larger than Grand magnets. But last I looked, they weren't available on the website. Probably a call to Rob would get them.

I use 316L. Unfortunately, magnets don't pick it up too well.

Couple air/compression/squonks and NOW the bottle should be ready to use...

That, or maybe you don't have a good tube/pin connection? Is that snug?
