I tried the compressed kind when I first started rebuilding, but they concentrate the heat a lot, and I always ended up with burnt wicks. So I started making spaced coils, and the problem disappeared -- so I stick with spaced coils. I'm a total tootle puffer, so more heat is not a good thing, IMO.

Andria

Aha! (Not the big AHA!, just aha!) THAT explains it. I think I'm with you. I don't like "hot." But I like flavor. Maybe slightly spaced, but not all touching would be good.

Oh, and the rest of you, too, yes, thank you! Now I understand THAT part. Definitely spaced for me then! (Ask Rich, he'll tell you I'm already spaced... )

This is an innovation that Boden thunk up --

achilles_bowedcoil-2.jpg

His look much better than mine, but essentially, it's contact on the botton, right where the airflow is, and spaced on the top of the coil -- I think his original reason was to reduce gunking, and it does seem to help a bit with that, but it also gives good flavor -- you don't notice much diff when you first start using the "bowed" coil, but if you switch back to a flat coil, you really notice, it doesn't offer as much flavor as the bowed coil. So I stick with that now.

Ita all a matter of preference and apples & oranges. I personally like contact coils where I dry fire them and then squeeze them together. vaping at 25 watts I never get a dry hit using max VG. I have made and used spaced coils before but the flavor seemed muted to me with them.

Backwards. The idea was to match the heat map to the cooling pattern so the top of the coil does not overheat.

Er...

Basically to improve flavor. ;)

I remember that, from the Tootle Puffer thread, before I lost track of it. ;)

Well, I like max VG, and I like flavor, and I seem to be extreeeeeemely sensitive to the flavor of "burned," even if it's only very slight, so that's why I was thinking maybe spaced coils for me. Now I'm confuseded again.

Are those "Bowedon" coils (haha, I made a new name for 'em) hard to get a wick into without mushing it all up or re-straightening it? (That's not an "official" question, I already asked my official question, it's just that I'm curious...)

I'll tell you a little secret, shhhh, most of the things builders bicker about don't really matter very much at all.

Resistance only matters if you are using a mech mod. Wicking material, as long as its not way too tight or way too loose it will work. Coils, make em round and connect both ends, they make heat.

This is sooooo much simpler than people make it.

Ask all the questions you want. There are no dumb questions, just dumb people who don't ask.

LOL! Thanks, at least I know I'm not dumb, and never have been! I was one of those, "Why? Why? Why?" kids and never stopped asking why. But I want to know EVERYTHING, you know, like I did when I was a teenager! :p

And that little secret means a lot, so thank you for sharing. I always overthink things at first, until I understand it, then I JUST DO IT.

Hmm.. it's just a little trickier to wick than a flat coil, but with cotton, I just twist the end up really tight, about a half-inch of it, and it goes thru pretty easily. I just lick my thumb and forefinger and it twists up nicely.

100% of the peeps who swallow saliva die!!!!! and you are vaping that crap!!!!!

Well um.. it's MY saliva, so I ain't really worried. Heck, it could be my husband's and I still wouldn't worry, he and I have been swapping spit for nearly 30 yrs and haven't died of it yet. :D But actually I cut about a half inch off the wick when it's finished, so I'm probably not even getting my own back.

Well I was supposed to be off today but got called in so I didn't get the Lemo worked on that I was gonna but I'm gonna play abit tonite.

For wire.......................

I can get where I wanna end up 27 different ways but in general I've found .5Ω at 30w gives me what I want. Dual 26ga gives me the smoothest. 24ga single is next best.

I prefer the STM over the Lemo by alot.

A 28ga .5Ω coil at 30w has a heat flux of over 1000. Thats blow torch hot. A 2 wraps it would be alittle hard to wick also.

26ga gets down to 500 which while half is still REALLY hot.

24ga gets us to about 250 which is nice to me.

But thats just the wire. Air is another huge factor. My tootle puffin Provari is built with a tiny coil out of tiny wire and only 15w but has the same heat flux of 250. But the Squape doesn't move the air of a Lemo or STM so its a very hot vape if I pull to long.

The Lemo is a single coil tank for our purposes. So I would get 24ga if you wanted to stay at .5 or 26 to build a high ohm tootle coil. Know that with the air flow on a Lemo low power can cause it to flood.

LOL! I love that song! Wow, zooms me way back! Ah, thems were the days...

Thanks @coolerat for the advice on wire gauge. I'll get 24 and start with that so hopefully I won't have too much of a surprise the first time. Then I can fiddle later. :)

Boden, in my case, it's because all I know is "I have a coil with a .5 ohm resistance, and I like the vape at 30 watts." That's ALL I know! LOL! I know I (and maybe a lot of others) are overthinking it, but that's why I'm here, so I can learn from people like you. I know you're going to say I can get the same results from a different resistance at a different wattage, maybe with a different coil configuration, but I have to have a starting point. And my starting point is I like .5 ohms and 30 watts. I also like 1.8 ohms at 7.5 watts, but with the current coils I have for those tanks, I don't get the flavor and vapor I've come to enjoy. I'm still a beginner, I'm not ashamed to admit it. ;)

Is that what you meant? Or did I totally misunderstand the point of your question? (See, THAT would be totally normal for me, too! LOL!)

And if you think THIS is bad, you should have seen me trying to milk my cow the first time. Talk about OVERTHINKING a thing! I finally figured out, you just sit down, and squeeze until milk falls out. Yep, that simple. And this will be too, one day.

What is up with the fixation on resistance when using regulated mods?

I am perplexed

This is a general question not aimed at anyone.

I find.. too low, and it's too hot; too high, and just not enough vapor even for a tootler like me, and if it goes really high, takes too long to heat up. I generally stay somewhere around 1.5Ω -- 1.3 to 1.7.

No, I understand you perfectly.

It's pretty simple, with a mod that uses wattage the only thing that matters is how much surface area of wick you are covering. That is why we mesure heat flux in milliwatts of heat per millimeter squared. That is watts of heat spread over an area.

If you made a one square inch heater generate ten watts of heat then made a second heater that is twice as big generate the same ten watts of heat, the smaller one inch heater would have a surface temperature that was twice as hot as the larger heater.

We cant tell you what wire to use to replicate the 0.5 ohm coil you have because we dont know how much surface area that 30W is spread over.
